UK Shortlist: Ebor Festival 2018

22nd August – 25th August 2018

UK Racing experts, Timeform, preview each and every race of the 2018 Ebor Festival from York.

Day Four

Sky Bet And Symphony Group Strensall Stakes (Group 3) (1) 1m177y – 10.50pm

Timeform Rating of previous winners: 124 125 129 128 126 (Avg 126)

Top Rated & Flags

Betting Forecast

$3.25 Lord Glitters, $4.5 Mustashry, $9 Threading, $9 Zaaki, $10 Seniority, $19 Morando, $21 Chilean, $23 Chief Ironside, $26 Master The World

Analyst’s Verdict

Lord Glitters has taken his form up a notch this term and ran another cracker when third in Sussex Stakes last time. He looks the one to beat in the opener. Last year’s victor Mustashry is much respected and should be spot on after his successful Sandown reappearence last month, whilst Seniority has already scored 3 times this season and has to enter calculations on his return to pattern company.

Sky Bet Melrose (Heritage Handicap) (2) 1m5f188y – 11.25pm

Timeform Rating of previous winners: 124 125 129 128 126 (Avg 126)

Top Rated & Flags

Betting Forecast

$9 Supernova, $9.5 Mekong, $11 Corgi, $11 Heart of Grace, $11 Making Miracles, $15 Berkshire Blue, $15 Coolongolook, $17 Blue Laureate, $17 Proschema, $21 Ghostwatch, $21 Shuhood, $23 Midnight Wilde, $23 Sergio Leone, $26 Candidate, $26 Lucky Deal, $26 Polish

Analyst’s Verdict

Supernova still doesn’t look the finished article, for all he is maturing quickly, and with this step up in trip likely to bring about further improvement, he may be up to completing the hat-trick. Making Miracles, Corgi and Berkshire Blue are a trio of others to consider in this valuable handicap.

Sky Bet City of York Stakes (Group 3) (1) 7f – 12.00am

Timeform Rating of previous winners: 128 131 131 132 129 (Avg 130)

Top Rated & Flags

Betting Forecast

$2.62 Expert Eye, $4.33 Suedois, $10 Above The Rest, $11 Donjuan Triumphant, $15 Tabarrak, $17 Arbalet, $19 So Beloved, $23 Gordon Lord Byron, $34 Nebo

Analyst’s Verdict

Expert Eye confirmed the form shown in the Jersey with an excellent second in the Group 1 Sussex Stakes at Goodwood at the beginning of this month, and he looks the one to beat back at this level. Suedois has hit top form again so commands plenty of respect, while Donjuan Triumphant shouldn’t be ignored after running a big race in the Lennox Stakes.

Sky Bet Ebor (Heritage Handicap) (2) 1m5f188y – 12.40am

Top Rated & Flags

Betting Forecast

$5.5 Stratum, $9 Blakeney Point, $13 Nakeeta, $13 Weekender, $13 Whiskey Sour, $15 Teodoro, $17 Crowned Eagle, $19 Dylan Mouth, $19 Sea The Lion, $23 Muntahaa, $23 Saunter, $29 Platitude, $34 Mountain Bell, $34 Time To Study, $41 Fun Mac, $41 Lord Yeats, $41 Montaly, $41 Mustajeer, $41 Scotland, $67 My Reward, $499 Saigon City, $500 Sir Chauvelin

Analyst’s Verdict

Marco Botti fields two credible candidates in Crowned Eagle and Dylan Mouth, particularly the former who was just edged out by the smart Hamada here in May. He again went down all guns blazing at Haydock last time and earns the vote. With stamina concerns surrounding Teodoro, Irish raiders Sea The Lion and Stratum are feared most. Blakeney Point and last year’s winner Nakeeta merit respect, too.

Julia Graves Roses Stakes (Listed) (1) 5f – 1.15am

Timeform Rating of previous winners: 116 113 111 116 116 (Avg 114)

Top Rated & Flags

Betting Forecast

$5 Sabre, $5.5 Vintage Brut, $7 I Believe In You, $8 Chapelli, $9 Well Done Fox, $11 Street Parade, $17 World Order, $26 Little Legs, $26 Moojim, $29 Deia Glory, $29 Glory Fighter

Analyst’s Verdict

An open renewal of this listed prize. Sabre has been knocking on the door at this level and gets a narrow vote in receipt of weight from previous listed scorers Vintage Brut and Well Done Fox. I Believe In You looks capable of making his mark in this company, while Chapelli is another unlikely to be too far away.

Sky Bet Handicap (2) 1¼m56y – 1.50am

Top Rated & Flags

Betting Forecast

$10 Alfarris, $11 Pivoine, $12 Banditry, $13 Exhort, $13 Kings Gift, $15 Alemaratalyoum, $15 Another Touch, $15 Communique, $17 Gulf of Poets, $19 Society Red, $21 Scottish Summit, $23 Thomas Cranmer, $26 Mooltazem, $29 Aasheq, $29 Awake My Soul, $34 Mistiroc, $34 Nicholas T, $41 Dolphin Vista, $41 King’s Pavilion

Analyst’s Verdict

It’s fair to say that things didn’t go Pivoine’s way in the Glorious Goodwood handicap won by Alfarris and, now 6 lb better off with that rival, Andrew Balding’s charge may well emerge on top granted a trouble-free passage this time. Alfarris is clearly going the right way and should give another good account, while Banditry will be a danger to all if on song, .

Sky Bet Handicap (2) 1¼m56y – 2.20am

Top Rated & Flags

Betting Forecast

$5.5 Lord Riddiford, $6 Roundhay Park, $7.5 Marnie James, $8 Savalas, $10 Fool For You, $11 Main Desire, $15 Eeh Bah Gum, $19 Bengali Boys, $19 Hawaam, $21 Airglow, $26 Angel Force

Analyst’s Verdict

A seriously competitive sprint to bring the meeting to a close. The thriving Roundhay Park gets a narrow vote but a strong case can be made for many others, including recent Glorious Goodwood 1-2 Lord Riddiford and Marnie James. Kevin Ryan’s Savalas already has a big handicap success to his name here this summer and is also on the shortlist.

Day Three

Sky Bet And Symphony Group Strensall Stakes (Group 3) (1) 1m177y – 10.5pm

Top Rated & Flags

Betting Forecast

$9 First Nation, $10 Melting Dew, $13 Erik The Red, $15 Appeared, $15 Mukhayyam, $17 Kelly’s Dino, $17 Pacify, $17 Titus, $19 Mister Belvedere, $19 Theglasgowwarrior, $21 Moonmeister, $21 Reshoun, $23 Caliburn, $26 Never Surrender, $29 Maori Bob, $34 Atkinson Grimshaw, $34 Royal Reserve, $41 Dance King, $41 Super Kid, $51 Archi’s Affaire

Analyst’s Verdict

First Nation arrives here much fresher than the majority of these and can build on an encouraging return at Ascot and show he’s a middle-distance performer still very much heading in the right direction. Melting Dew is at the top of his game and should go well again, while Mukhayyam has a fine record here and is ideally drawn for a front-runner. Caliburn and Titus are also shortlisted.

Weatherbys Hamilton Lonsdale Cup Stakes (Group 2) (1) 2m56y – 11.25pm

Timeform Rating of previous winners: 128 128 128 129 123 (Avg 127)

Top Rated & Flags

Betting Forecast

$1.53 Stradivarius, $11 Red Verdon, $13 Idaho, $17 Desert Skyline, $21 Count Octave, $26 Sir Chauvelin, $29 St Michel, $34 Max Dynamite, $126 Petitioner

Analyst’s Verdict

It’s difficult to look beyond Stradivarius, who underlined his status as the best stayer in the business when landing the Goodwood Cup last time. John Gosden’s charge should have little trouble in adding this prize to his Cup-race haul and, in the process, collect the new £1m stayers’ bonus. The admirable Red Verdon gets the nod for forecast purposes ahead of Desert Skyline and Idaho.

Al Basti Equiworld Gimcrack Stakes (Group 2) (1) 6f – 12.00am

Timeform Rating of previous winners: 129 124 130 132 129 (Avg 129)

Top Rated & Flags

Betting Forecast

$5 Space Traveller, $5 The Irish Rover, $5.5 Shine So Bright, $7.5 Legends of War, $12 Chuck Willis, $13 Emaraaty Ana, $15 Cosmic Law, $15 Showout, $34 Semoum

Analyst’s Verdict

Space Traveller looked potentially smart when landing a couple of minor events last month and can take this step up in class in his stride. Richard Fahey’s charge may have most to fear from Emaraaty Ana, who was behind Chuck Willis at Newbury but still looked green on that occasion and should be more street-wise this time. The Irish Rover and Shine So Bright are others to consider.

Coolmore Nunthorpe Stakes (Group 1) (1) 5f – 12.35am

Timeform Rating of previous winners: 125 125 133 135 136 (Avg 131)

Top Rated & Flags

Betting Forecast

$1.91 Battaash, $7.5 Blue Point, $17 Mabs Cross, $21 Sioux Nation, $23 Caspian Prince, $29 Havana Grey, $29 Judicial, $29 Muthmir, $29 Washington Dc, $34 Mr Lupton, $34 Take Cover, $41 Heartache, $67 Alpha Delphini, $67 Battle of Jericho, $151 Declarationofpeace, $251 Abel Handy

Analyst’s Verdict

Providing he remains calm during the preliminaries, Battaash can exact revenge on his Royal Ascot conqueror Blue Point and, in the process, banish memories of his defeat in this contest last year when his pre-race antics proved costly. So impressive at Goodwood 3 weeks ago, Battaash will simply be too hot to handle if he puts his best foot forward. Blue Point and Mabs Cross can fill the places.

British Stallion Studs EBF Convivial Maiden Stakes (2) 7f – 1.15am

Timeform Rating of previous winners: 112 109 115 97 107 (Avg 108)

Top Rated & Flags

Betting Forecast

$3.25 Beat Le Bon, $4 Sky Defender, $11 Barys, $13 Indomitable, $15 Commanding Officer, $17 Voltaic, $19 George Mallory, $21 Sevenhillsofrome, $29 Caplin, $51 Arogo, $67 Boston George, $151 My Girl

Analyst’s Verdict

The two that stand out are Beat Le Bon and Sky Defender, both of whom shaped with considerable promise on their respective debuts and hold Grouprace entries. Preference is for the former, who pulled well clear of the rest when going close in a big-field minor event at Newbury. Indomitable and Barys are eachway contenders and newcomer George Mallory needs a second look in the betting.

Nationwide Accident Repair Services Handicap (2) 7f192y – 1.50am

Top Rated & Flags

Betting Forecast

$6.5 Mystic Flight, $9 Crack On Crack On, $9.5 Urban Aspect, $10 Borodin, $12 Kassar, $15 Ulshaw Bridge, $17 Corrosive, $17 Nicklaus, $19 Silver Quartz, $21 Aquarium, $23 Zap, $26 Dream Today, $26 International Man, $41 Commander Han, $41 Finniston Farm, $51 Tangled, $67 Queen’s Sargent

Analyst’s Verdict

A highly competitive finale. Borodin surely has more to come and gets the nod for the Richard Fahey team but Urban Aspect and Mystic Flight also look highly progressive, while the likes of Crack On Crack On, Ulshaw Bridge and Corrosive are already proven in these bigfield handicaps.

Day Two

Sky Bet Lowther Stakes (Group 2) (1) 6f – 10.55pm

Timeform Rating of previous winners: 118 135 127 124 123 (Avg 125)

Top Rated & Flags

Betting Forecast

$2.88 Fairyland, $3.5 Angel’s Hideaway, $10 Flawless Jewel, $11 Little Kim, $17 Firelight, $17 The Mackem Bullet, $19 Queen Jo Jo, $23 Stage Play, $67 Orange Blossom

Analyst’s Verdict

This doesn’t look the strongest Lowther on paper and Angel’s Hideaway and Fairyland both stand out on form. The former got back on the up when running out a clear-cut winner of the Princess Margaret Stakes (Group 3) at Ascot last time so is just preferred. Flawless Jewel should have more to offer given her pedigree/connections.

Goffs UK Premier Yearling Stakes (2) 6f – 11.25pm

Timeform Rating of previous winners: 118 120 112 117 116 (Avg 117)

Top Rated & Flags

Betting Forecast

$8 He’zanarab, $9 Kodyanna, $10 Fanaar, $11 Masaru, $13 Celebrity Dancer, $13 Concierge, $19 Jfoul, $19 Magical Wish, $19 Secret Venture, $21 Gallovie, $21 Oberyn Martell, $23 Big Baby Bull, $26 Red Balloons, $34 Barossa Red, $41 Alfie Solomons, $41 Dark Thunder, $41 Pacino, $51 Dream of Honour, $51 On The Stage, $67 Raypeteafterme

Analyst’s Verdict

Kodyanna has improved with each race to date and holds the strongest form credentials in this field. Already successful at this course, she is taken to add another victory to her tally. There are plenty of dangers however, with He’zanarab, Celebrity Dancer and Fanaar of particular interest.

Clipper Logistics Handicap (2) 7f192y – 12.00am

Top Rated & Flags

Betting Forecast

$8 Seniority, $9.5 Afaak, $10 Sharja Bridge, 12 Firmament, 13 Original Choice, 15 Kynren, 15 Reach High, 17 Get Knotted, 19 Gulf of Poets, 23 Hors de Combat, 29 Mythical Madness, 29 Poet’s Society, 29 Sea Fox, 34 Baraweez, 34 Bravery, 34 Mubtasim, 34 Silver Line, 41 Arcanada, 51 Love Dreams, 67 Dommersen

Analyst’s Verdict

The vote goes to Afaak, who has followed his C&D victory at the Dante meeting with rock-solid efforts in a couple of major handicaps. He remains on a feasible mark and a strongly-run race back at this trip on fast ground equates to ideal circumstances. Firmament should make a bold bid to repeat his 2016 victory in this race, while Kynren, Seniority and Sharja Bridge all have plenty going for them.

Darley Yorkshire Oaks (Group 1) (1) 1m3f188y – 12.35am

Timeform Rating of previous winners: 134 131 125 134 132 (Avg 131)

Top Rated & Flags

Betting Forecast

$2.38 Sea of Class, $5 Laurens, $8 Coronet, $8 Magic Wand, $15 Eziyra, $17 Horseplay, $26 Bye Bye Baby, $81 Flattering

Analyst’s Verdict

Whilst a couple of 3-y-os make plenty of appeal it may pay to take a chance on last year’s runner-up Coronet. A winner of the Group 2 Middleton Stakes on return, she wasn’t at her best when third in the King George at Ascot but is expected to be seen in a much better light back against her own sex. Irish Oaks heroine Sea of Class and the highly admirable Laurens are both highly respected also.

British EBF & Sir Henry Cecil Galtres Stakes (Listed) (1) 1m3f188y – 1.15am

Timeform Rating of previous winners: 118 114 117 113 113 (Avg 115)

Top Rated & Flags

Betting Forecast

$2 Lah Ti Dar, $7.5 Sun Maiden, $10 What A Home, $11 Alwaysandforever, $17 Snow Wind, $21 Lubinka, $21 Shailene, $23 Light of Joy, $51 Isabella

Analyst’s Verdict

Lah Ti Dar leapt to the top of the Oaks market following her Newmarket success in May, and though she had to miss that engagement, she’s a Group filly in the making and is expected to see these off. Sun Maiden wasn’t herself in the Ribblesdale but is in the right hands to bounce back, with What A Home perhaps best of the rest.

British Stallion Studs EBF Fillies’ Handicap (2) 7f – 1.50am

Top Rated & Flags

Betting Forecast

$4 Move Swiftly, $9 Victory Wave, $11 Preening, $12 Starlight Romance, $13 Florenza, $17 Betty F, $17 Homeopathic, $19 Crossing The Line, $19 Elysium Dream, $26 Clubbable, $26 Dark Intention, $26 Lincoln Rocks, $34 Angel of Darkness, $34 Summer Icon, $41 Maggies Angel

Analyst’s Verdict

Move Swiftly was well on top come the finish, despite meeting trouble from her wide draw, at Goodwood last month and she has enough speed to suggest she’ll cope with this drop back to 7f. Starlight Romance ran a cracker when runner-up over this C&D 26 days ago and should go well again off the same mark, while Betty F remains with potential after her eye-catching run in the Oak Tree Stakes

Day One

Sky Bet And Symphony Group Handicap (2) 5f89y – 10.55pm

Top Rated & Flags

Betting Forecast

$10 Tis Marvellous, $11 Culturati, $13 El Astronaute, $15 Fashion Queen, $15 Final Venture, $15 Gracious John, $15 Tommy Taylor, $17 Copper Knight, $19 Holmeswood, $19 Tanasoq, $21 Boom The Groom, $23 Eastern Impact, $23 Fendale, $23 Line of Reason, $26 Harome, $29 Carlton Frankie, $29 Watchable, $41 Koditime, $41 Midnight Malibu, $41 Spoof

Analyst’s Verdict

A chance is taken on Fashion Queen, who enjoyed her finest hour thus far when landing a listed contest here last season. She shaped as though close to concert pitch when going close at Deauville 25 days ago and makes her handicap debut off a potentially handy mark. There are dangers aplenty, including Tommy Taylor, the unexposed Culturati, Holmeswood and recent Ascot winner Tis Marvellous.

Tattersalls Acomb Stakes (Group 3) (1) 7f – 11.25pm

Timeform Rating of previous winners: 118 125 124 122 123 (Avg 122)

Top Rated & Flags

Betting Forecast

$3.75 Watan, $4 Broome, $6 Persian Moon, $9 Phoenix of Spain, $12 James Street, $15 Swissterious, $17 Pogo, $23 Ventura Ocean

Analyst’s Verdict

Persian Moon is on the up and has strong C&D form to his name that could count for plenty, so he receives the vote. Watan and Broome look good prospects, while the imposing Phoenix of Spain also deserves a mention.

Sky Bet Great Voltigeur Stakes (Group 2) (1) 1m3f188y – 12.00am

Timeform Rating of previous winners: 135 137 137 130 144 (Avg 137)

Top Rated & Flags

Betting Forecast

$3 Cross Counter, $3.75 Kew Gardens, $6.5 Wells Farhh Go, $10 The Pentagon, $17 Old Persian, $26 Sevenna Star, $29 M C Muldoon, $34 Nelson, $51 Zabriskie

Analyst’s Verdict

Cross Counter made a big impression when quickening clear in the Gordon Stakes at Glorious Goodwood 18 days ago, setting a new course record in the process, and sets a high standard if able to reproduce that form. His biggest threat may come from stablemate Old Persian, who had excuses in the Irish Derby after his King Edward success at Royal Ascot. Wells Farhh Go is another to consider.

Juddmonte International Stakes (Group 1) (1) 1¼m56y – 12.35am

Timeform Rating of previous winners: 136 141 129 138 138 (Avg 136)

Top Rated & Flags

Betting Forecast

$3 Poet’s Word, $4 Roaring Lion, $5.5 Saxon Warrior, $13 Benbatl, $15 Without Parole, $17 Latrobe, $19 Thunder Snow, $41 Thundering Blue

Analyst’s Verdict

As so many of Sir Michael Stoute’s leading lights have done over the years, Poet’s Word is improving with age. Indeed, victories in the Prince of Wales’s Stakes and King George have elevated this 5-y-o to the upper echelon of the middle distance division, and further success awaits here. Roaring Lion outpointed Saxon Warrior in the Eclipse and is feared most, though Benbatl also commands respect.

Sky Bet Handicap (2) 2m56y – 1.15am

Top Rated & Flags

Betting Forecast

$7.5 Genetics, $9 Speedo Boy, $11 Davy’s Dilemma, $12 Hochfeld, $13 Here And Now, $13 Soldier In Action, $13 Stormin Tom, $15 Northwest Frontier, $17 Manjaam, $19 Mancini, $21 Bedrock, $23 Natural Scenery, $26 Eye of The Storm, $34 Watersmeet, $41 Clever Cookie, $41 Graceland, $67 Blue Rambler

Analyst’s Verdict

Eye of The Storm appeals from both a handicapping and value point of view, having finished third to subsequent John Smith’s Cup hero Euchen Glen off 3 lb higher in June. Likely to go off at a rewarding price following a couple of lesser efforts (valid excuses on both occasions), he is worth chancing. Hochfeld and stablemate Soldier In Action are both feared, along with Here And Now and Speedo Boy.

Sky Bet Nursery Handicap (2) 6f – 1.50am

Top Rated & Flags

Betting Forecast

$8 Moyassar, $8.5 Don Armado, $10 Dark Shadow, $11 Eljayeff, $17 Evie Speed, $17 Ginger Nut, $17 Prairie Spy, $21 Gabrial The Wire, $21 Rathbone, $23 Blyton, $23 Indian Sounds, $23 The Great Heir, $26 Barend Boy, $29 Prince Elzaam, $29 Woodside Wonder, $34 Hesslewood, $34 Thegreatestshowman, $41 Jungle Inthebungle, $51 Absolute Dream, $51 I Am A Dreamer

Analyst’s Verdict

Unsurprisingly there are several interesting contenders, but Evie Speed is top of the list having shown plenty of pace when overcoming a tough draw at Ripon and there’s also substance to her early form. Eljayeff chases a hat-trick and may have been let in lightly for this nursery bow, while Don Armado was impressive at Goodwood.
