EXPERT RACING TIPS: RANDWICK

Mitch Lewis

BACK: 5. Private Eye (WIN) for 3 units (Rated at $3.00)

PRIVATE EYE is flying now and hits this race 3rd up with a good fitness level. He gave nothing a chance at Caulfield last start and looks every chance to do so again given the fact he has the extra race fitness on his side against resuming runners. The wide barrier may not be ideal, but if he can cross and find cover behind a runner like PERICLES, it should set him up perfectly.

5. Bellenth
1. Denman Star
9. Change My Address
2. Gently Rolled

Betting Strategy

BELLENTH was strong 1st up when winning on the heavy track. He could perhaps improve off that run fitter 2nd up now and will race up on speed. DENMAN STAR has been close to a win in his last 2 runs in similar level races to this, he is suited in these better conditions today. CHANGE MY ADDDRESS finds herself in an easier race than he last few so she could be a big improver. GENTLY ROLLED perhaps didn’t appreciate the wet track last start so looking for improvement.

14. Lightning Speed
1. Highway Strip
4. Kreon
5. So Magnificent

Betting Strategy

record and was a winner 1st up. If he can navigate the wide barrier, he is going well enough to win a race like this. HIGHWAY STRIP has been trialing impressively and goes well at this level, but another runner who gets no favours from a wide barrier. KREON was well supported in a similar race to this last start, expect he can be around the mark. SO MAGNIFICENT resumes, he has a good record so far into his short career and can run well fresh.

10. Spirit Of Wealth
9. Chidiac
8. Island Dec
7. Monte Supreme

Betting Strategy

SPIRIT OF WEALTH comes into this race as a short price favourite, but does look tough to beat. She was good on debut before having excuses in runs after, clearly talented and recent trials showed that. CHIDIAC was a winner 1st up, undefeated from 3 runs at the 1100m so could be suited. ISLAND DEC resumes and runs well fresh into a prep (3:3-0-0). MONTE SURPREME resumed in winning fashion can build off that now

8. Travolta
1. Changingoftheguard
4. Glory Daze
7. Age Of Sail

Betting Strategy

TRAVOLTA impressed last start when winning over the 2000m. He is untested at the 2400m trip, but how he hit the line last time out suggests that he will appreciate the extra trip today, looks hard to hold out with a clear run. CHANGINGOFTHEGUARD could starts to find his better form now he is fitter and 3rd up. The race lacks much speed and he looks the likely leader who could control the race tempo. GLORY DAZE has been consistent and is close to a win. 2400m could test him but he maps for a soft run. Expecting AGE OF SAIL can improve 2nd up and rising to the 2400m where he has won previously.

11. Fully Lit
12. Aberlour
13. Shohisha
9. Lord Penman

Betting Strategy

LAY: 9. Lord Penman (WIN) for 1 unit (Rated at $10.00)

LORD PENMAN has a strong record so far into his short career, but not keen on the set up he is facing here in this race. He needs to perform at close to a career peak and that is going to be made tricky by the fact he has drawn a wide barrier and there is genuine speed below him. He gives weight to some of these quicker horses as well so it could see him land in an awkward position in run, expecting improvement can come after this run 3rd up.

1. Within The Law
3. Savvy Hallie
2. Tupakara
16. Apocalyptic

Betting Strategy

WITHIN THE LAW was solid when resuming, she continues to be consistent and competing well in these stronger races, but gets no map favours from the barrier. SAVVY HALLIE is a last start winner and did beat some of her key rivals in this race last time, she gets the better race map than some, but there could be a lot of pressure up on speed. TUPAKARA resumes, she may be better over more ground going forwards but could benefit from a quick tempo. APOCALYPTIC is lightly raced but showed talent on debut.

2. Ceolwulf
5. Sir Delius
7. Land Legend
3. Vauban

Betting Strategy

This race feels like there is more to learn out of it with more than a handful of these runners likely to be aimed at The Melbourne Cup. So while the race is stacked with talent, some of these horses wont be suited at the 1600m. CEOLWULF looks the best suited at this distance after his 1st up run. Hit the line strongly from a wide position but this is his distance range. SIR DELIUS can race up on speed and may need a soft tempo to be able to pinch this race from that position. LAND LEGEND has an extra race under his belt vs some of his rivals here so he may hit the line strongly and VAUBAN showed good improvement in his last prep so will be interesting to see what order he resumes at now heading towards The Cup.

5. Headwall
4. Lady Shenandoah
1. Jimmysstar
3. Jedibeel

Betting Strategy

BACK: 5. Headwall (WIN) for 2 units (Rated at $4.50)

Stars galore feature in this race with The Everest perhaps in mind for a few of these. Some of these stars such as LADY SHENANDOAH I feel will be better improved over more ground and the runner who may be best suited over the 1000m trip is HEADWALL. He has an impressive record over the 1000M (9:5-1-3) so this could be the perfect kick off point for a runner who will be hitting the line strongly.

5. Private Eye
15. Swift Flacoln
2. Linebacker
7. Pericles

Betting Strategy

1. Point And Shoot
10. Dominetta
11. Winston Hill
8. Scintilla

Betting Strategy

POINT AND SHOOT found a new level last prep and progressed well through the grades. Was keen to find him here, but conditions and race map were enough of a worry to have no bet, still expect he is the one to beat though. DOMINETTA maps well to race on speed from the inside barrier, she resumes here and has won fresh previously. WINSTON HILL didnt appear to handle the wet track last start and should appreciate the better track conditions today. SCINTILLA resumes, she showed good talent through last prep, but small query is the one trial? perhaps she will be better suited for this run going forwards.

Randwick Racecourse Betting Tips

Royal Randwick is located in Sydney’s Eastern Suburbs, and like Rosehill the racecourse is operated by the Australian Turf Club (ATC). Randwick hosts 20 time-honoured Group 1s each year but today its biggest raceday is The Everest, which at $15 million is the world’s richest turf race. For expert race tips and best bets on The Everest and every Randwick meeting, head to the Betfair Hub.

History

The site was first designated for use as a racecourse in January 1883, with a private raceday held there six months later. For 20 years between 1840 and 1860, the racecourse was only used as a training facility but racing resumed in May 1860 with a crowd of more than 6,000 in attendance. The ATC assumed control of Randwick in 2011, when the Australian Jockey Club and the Sydney Turf Club merged to form a new body.

Fast Facts

  • Considered the headquarters of Sydney racing, Randwick is on designated public land and is leased to the ATC.
  • Randwick was given royal status in 1992, when Queen Elizabeth II paid a visit to officially open the Paddock Stand.
  • During his visit to Australia in 1970, Pope Paul VI held mass at Randwick. Some say racegoers have been seeking divine intervention ever since!
  • Several scenes in the Mission: Impossible franchise were filmed at Randwick.

Key Events

Over two days each April, Randwick hosts The Championships which offer more than $20 million in prizemoney. Featuring several Group 1s, including the Australian Derby, Queen Elizabeth Stakes, Sydney Cup and Doncaster Handicap, The Championships are the climax of Sydney’s autumn carnival. With comprehensive Randwick tips and a proven track record, our team of tipsters have you covered.

The feature race of Sydney’s spring carnival is The Everest, which was first run in 2017 and today is the richest turf race held anywhere in the world. The race attracts Australia’s best sprinters, and is the centrepiece of Randwick racing each spring.

Track Profile

The Rosehill track has a circumference of 2,224m, with the home straight measuring 410m. In its early days Randwick was referred to as the ‘Sandy Course’ due to the poor condition of the track, but today it is considered Sydney’s premier racecourse.
