EXPERT RACING TIPS: MORNINGTON

MORNINGTON PREVIEW AND TIPS | EXPERT TIPS | FRIDAY SEPTEMBER 5TH 2025

RAIL: 8m TRACK: Soft 5

The first meeting back at Mornington for a few months and they often put the rail out like this and in the past with the rail out and some sting out of the track, you have been able to swoop and win.

Best Bets

Jackson Oldham

LAY: 2. Kastun Star (WIN) for 2 units (Rated at $6.00)

Kastun Star gets a strong map advantage and has race fitness plus a positive jockey switch, all of those factors may keep him in the market but I just don’t think he has anywhere near the ability of the other two favourites.

BACK: 2. Xtra Rush (WIN) for 2 units (Rated at $1.55)

Xtra Rush has a ratings profile that is already strong enough to win this race and has what others don’t and that is upside.

3. Hanuman
5. Bazaball Rewarded
10. Olivia Rose
6. Evil Lover

Betting Strategy

Hanuman was very well supported late on Betfair first-up at Pakenham and had every chance but that was a stronger race than this and he does have a fitness advantage on his two main rivals.

7. Kiwi Raider
11. Street Artist
4. Cabaret Queen
6. Gattino Veloce

Betting Strategy

A really strong race, I’m giving the slight edge to Kiwi Raider, who couldn’t have jumped out much better but Street Artist returns here with M.Zahra and has been gelded.

11. Couldthisbetheone
12. Pepe
6. Laurel Bay
2. Kastun Star

Betting Strategy

LAY: 2. Kastun Star (WIN) for 2 units (Rated at $6.00)

Kastun Star gets a strong map advantage and has race fitness plus a positive jockey switch, all of those factors may keep him in the market but I just don’t think he has anywhere near the ability of the other two favourites.

11. Tagline
5. Gamolina
3. Join The Que
2. Fortune Link

Betting Strategy

Tagline comes through a fast race at Moe, although was rails in run which was advantageous versus the day, the winner from that race ran very well at Sandown on Wednesday into second.

2. Xtra Rush
7. Harsh
4. Another Nephew
3. Maxxi Bon

Betting Strategy

BACK: 2. Xtra Rush (WIN) for 2 units (Rated at $1.55)

Xtra Rush has a ratings profile that is already strong enough to win this race and has what others don’t and that is upside.

11. Miss Trustfall
9. Lady Potato Head
10. Macha
1. Gallant Prince

Betting Strategy

An extremely even race, no opinion.

6. Normandy Lass
9. Immerse
5. Lavender Glory
7. Not Surprised

Betting Strategy

Another very even race, Normandy Lass proved she wasn’t just a jump out star winning impressively at Bairnsdale first-up and Immerse improved with the new camp but now has to take it East of the city and onto a grass track.

7. Espinho
8. Chewing Gum
15. Cobblestone Way
5. Powerful Torque

Betting Strategy

Going with Espinho, who has the race fitness on Chewing Gum, again, another very even race.

MORNINGTON TIPS

SUMMARY

Mornington Racecourse is set amongst 68 hectares of rolling lawns and cypress trees, and affords racegoers views of the nearby Moorooduc Plains. The grandstand and tight turning track create a natural amphitheatre on raceday, with Mornington – which is operated by the Melbourne Racing Club – hosting 20 meetings per year. The club’s feature fixture is Mornington Cup Day, which offers a golden ticket to the Caulfield Cup. For Mornington race tips on cup day and throughout the year, head to the Betfair Hub.

KEY EVENTS

The Listed Mornington Cup, run over 2400m under weight-for-age conditions in March, is a ballot exempt race for the $5m Caulfield Cup. Previous winners include Kings Will Dream (2018), who brought up his fifth straight victory in the Mornington Cup and went on to start favourite in the Caulfield  Cup, but could only manage sixth after a luckless run. Chris Waller’s progressiver stayer Crystal Pegasus earned a ticket to the 2022 Caulfield Cup after his Mornington Cup win under Craig Williams. The Listed Hareeba Stakes, named in honour of the champion sprinter who won six Black Type races, is run over 1200m on the same day.

TRACK PROFILE

With a circumference of 1800m and a short home straight measuring just 210m, Mornington is one of Victoria’s smaller racetracks. There is a minor incline in the home straight, but given its shallow gradient it doesn’t have a major impact on races. The tight track and short home straight invariably favour on-pace runners, particularly in sprint and middle distance races. With back markers usually struggling to make up ground, it pays to draw inside and be up on the speed. Betfair’s team of tipsters stay across the speed maps and track variables when they deliver their Mornington best bets today and for every meeting.

HISTORY

In 1899, the Mornington Racing Club was formed and the first race meeting was held at Mornington in 1911. The first ever Mornington Cup was run over 1700m in 1921, with a prize fund of £80 and a trophy valued at £75. By 1948, the prize purse had increased to £1000. In 2010, the Melbourne racing Club assumed control of Mornington Racecourse.
