EXPERT RACING TIPS: CAULFIELD

CAULFIELD PREVIEW AND TIPS | EXPERT TIPS | SATURDAY SEPTEMBER 20TH 2025

RAIL: 6m TRACK: Good 4

Expect horses on-speed to have a strong advantage for the entire meeting.

7. Nation’s Call
4. Al Duca
1. The Creator
5. Prince Eric

Betting Strategy

Not much between Al Duca and Nation’s Call for mine, just giving the edge to Nation’s Call, who I think is better suited at 1600m than 2000m, gets a gun from gate one and B.Shinn and the recent jumpout was terrific.

9. Shadhavar
1. Paradise City
4. Subliminal
7. Eagle Express

Betting Strategy

BACK: 9. Shadhavar (WIN) for 2 units (Rated at $3.20)

Shadhavar was terrific beating all bar On Display at this track and distance last start, sitting on a fast speed despite not having the platform to do so, going from 1100m to 1400m, should get every chance from the gate.

2. Austmarr
4. Miraval Rose
1. See You In Heaven
7. Stretan Angel

Betting Strategy

Very little between top and bottom here for me, going with Austmarr, who should get every chance and own the race from the front but did start triple the price of Stretan Angel last time they met and now gives her an extra 3kg. See You In Heaven was outstanding first-up for the new camp and the extra 100m suits the map is tricky again.

6. Tiger Shark
4. Oak Hill
1. Nadal
7. Red Hot Nicc

Betting Strategy

The potential pattern the day make throw this race right up in the air, with both Oak Hill and Nadal very likely to settle worse than midfield. Tiger Shark goes on top, assuming she rolls forward.

6. Planet Red
4. Bingi
5. Stay Cosmic
7. Estremo

Betting Strategy

Planet Red has been crying out for more ground and finally gets up to 1400m, he ran the fastest last 200m of the race at The Valley, slicing through a small gap and will need a similar run here.

12. Chateau Eze
6. Vivid Sun
10. Lathlain
11. Yum

Betting Strategy

An impossible race for me, Chateau Eze won with the handbrake on at Benalla, as did a few others but she can be forward here and is a slice of overs at the double figure quote.

9. Sir Delius
10. Moira
2. Buackaroo
8. Golden Path

Betting Strategy

Sir Delius is being backed like he will be aggressive early and find the spot outside leader, which if he does so I will be happy to take $1.80+ in-play, especially considering Buckaroo is likely to be worse than midfield.

9. Angel Capital
16. Sepals
1. Another Will
15. Miss Roumbini

Betting Strategy

Angel Capital broke the hands off the clock first-up at The Valley and gets in here with only 53.5kg. He looks clearly the most likely for mine but I just cannot price him under $3 with the very obvious map issues staring me right in the face.

17. Half Yours
3. Future History
11. Interpretation
16. Statuario

Betting Strategy

Half Yours is clearly the most likely but I can’t see any edge at $2.10 in backing him.

8. Gilded Water
5. Kings Valley
3. Whiskey On The Hill
10. Mr Verse

Betting Strategy

LAY: 10. Mr Verse (WIN) for 2 units (Rated at $6.75)

I have seen plenty tipping him but I am against Mr Verse, who comes through midweek form and will be giving the favourite and most likely winning chance Gilded Water plenty of head start on a day where I don’t believe you can do so.

CAULFIELD TIPS AND PREVIEW | RACECOURSE

SUMMARY

Known locally as ‘The Heath’, Caulfield Racecourse is located approximately nine kilometres from the Melbourne CBD, on the boundary of Caulfield and Caulfield East in the city’s south eastern suburbs. Together with Sandown and Mornington racecourses, Caulfield is operated by the Melbourne Racing Club (MRC). It is widely considered Melbourne’s second most prestigious racecourse behind Flemington, hosting around 25 meetings each season including some of the country’s most famous and historic races, headlined by the Group 1 Caulfield Cup. For the best Caulfield tips, previews and all the form including the Caulfield Cup, head to the Betfair Hub.

FAST FACTS

Six internationally-trained horses have won the Caulfield Cup. They are: Taufan’s Melody (1998) for British trainer Lady Herries; All the Good (2008) and Best Solution (2018) for Godolphin’s Dubai trainer Saeed bin Suroor; Dunaden (2012) for French trainer Mikel Delzangles; Admire Rakti (2014) for Japanese trainer Tomoyuki Umeda; and Mer De Glace (2019) for Japanese trainer Hisashi Shimizu.

KEY EVENTS

Together with the Melbourne Cup, Cox Plate and Golden Slipper, the Caulfield Cup makes up the four majors of Australian racing. It is the world’s richest turf handicap over 2400m and dates back to 1879. It was won in 2021 by Incentivise and in 2020 by Verry Elleegant, the two horses which then ran the quinella in the 2021 Melbourne Cup. In autumn Caulfield also hosts Victoria’s premier contest for juveniles, the Blue Diamond Stakes. A total of 12 Group 1 races are staged annually at Caulfield, with the prestigious Caulfield Guineas and the equivalent for fillies (the Thousand Guineas) both held the week before the Caulfield Cup. From three-year-old contests to handicap races for experienced stayers, Betfair’s leading team of tipsters bring you their Caulfield best bets for each and every meeting at The Heath.

TRACK PROFILE

The track is triangular-shaped, with a total circumference measuring of 2,080m and a home straight of 367m. Some horses struggle to handle the tight turns and contours of the track, with interference also common particularly in the Caulfield Cup which features 18 runners.

In 1995/96, the track was widened to 30m around the entire circumference and the straight was lengthened by 43m. The current surface has been cambered from the outside running rail, with the crown of the track at the outside running rail. The banking on the final turn into the home straight is four per cent, while the other turns have an equivalent banking of two per cent. Given the quirks of the track it pays to follow our tipsters when they bring you their Caulfield best bets free of charge on the Betfair Hub.

HISTORY

Originally the Victorian Amateur Turf Club (VATC) raced at Ballarat, but in 1876 the club moved to Caulfield for its Melbourne base having owned the land since 1859. Feature races were soon held at Caulfield, with the Caulfield Cup making its debut in 1879. The inaugural event was won by Newminster, whose name adorns one of the barns at Racing Victoria’s quarantine facilities in Werribee. During World War II, Caulfield was utilised as an army barracks so racing was moved to Flemington for the duration of the conflict.
