EXPERT TIPS: PGA CHAMPIONSHIP

PGA CHAMPIONSHIP 2024 PREVIEW

The PGA Championship brings together the best field annually in the golfing year and we have a sensational field heading to Kentucky this week to play the fabled Valhalla course. Scottie Scheffler has been cleared to play following the birth of his son while Rory McIlroy chases his first major in a decade on a course he won this event 10 years back. Outside of Scheffler, no player on the planet is playing better golf than Xander Schauffele while ‘Big Game’ Brooks is back looking to not only defend his crown but win his sixth major. With a strong LIV contingent and the next generation of PGA Tour stars like Collin Morikawa and Max Homa, this is going to be a tournament for the ages.

VALHALLA – COURSE OVERVIEW

Valhalla was designed by Jack Nicklaus in 1985 and the Bear led the 2011 renovation. The course was lengthened in 2021 and now measuring 7609 yards, a beast for a Par 71. Water is in play on seven holes and 60 bunkers are spread across the course. The Greens are bentgrass and likely to run around 13 on the stimp. It is a course that has not proven overly difficult by major standards and it is one that plays right into the hands of big hitters who can find relatively small green complexes.

WINNING PROFILE

The PGA Championship has typically been won by younger golfers and has historically been the tournament most likely to deliver a breakthrough debut major win. Americans have won eight straight PGA Championships though Brooks Koepka and Justin Thomas have won five between them. This has historically been a tournament the best players in the world have saluted in and past PGA Championship as well as strong recent major form have been positive leads. No major sets up better for bombers than the PGA Championship.

Best Back Bets

Betting Strategy

BACK: Joaquin Niemann (at $26 or Better)

Niemann was the top selection for The Masters and we are going back to the well as he looks an outstanding chance to win the PGA Championship. While LIV numbers need to be take with a grain of salt, he is dominating the key numbers. Niemann leads LIV in Strokes Gained: Approach while he ranks 2nd in Driving Distance and 4th in Strokes Gained: Off The Tee. He finished third at The Memorial in 2022. A top tier player, he is right in this.

Justin Thomas (at $31 or Better)

The two-time PGA Championship winner is not playing the best golf of his career but this tournament tends to set up well for him and he is a very enticing price. Thomas ranks Top 15 in Strokes Gained: Tee To Green, Strokes Gained: Approach and Par 5 Scoring. His game has been tracking north and with his approach game in good order he looks an excellent play this week.

BACK: Tyrell Hatton (at $51 or Better)

Tyrell Hatton is one of the best iron players in the world and he is playing some quality golf with four Top 9 finishes in his last five starts including a T-9 at The Masters. He ranks 4th in Strokes Gained: Approach, 4th in Long Approaches and 5th in Scrambling. Loves bentgrass greens and profiles exceptionally well.

Best Lay Bet

Betting Strategy

LAY: Jon Rahm (at $26 or Shorter)

Jon Rahm at his best is one of the best golfers on the planet but his form dropped away dramatically after winning The Masters last year and playing on LIV really hasn’t suited his game. His true strokes gained number has halved in 12 months and he still has not won on LIV. Major unders.

Best In-Play Trading Opportunity

Betting Strategy

BACK: Xander Schauffele (at $15 or Better)

Schauffele profiles absolutely tremendously this week. He has the best long approach game on the PGA Tour while he is outstanding off the tee an can score on Par 5s. He led the Wells Fargo after the opening round. His issue is his inability to get over the line. He looks a great back-to-lay proposition.

LAY: Xander Schauffele (at or below $8.00)

Best Prop Market Bet – First Round Leader

Betting Strategy

BACK: Stephen Jaeger (at $71 or Better)

Shooting wide here and looking for someone long off the tee and German Stephen Jaeger ticks those boxes. Jaeger ranks 10th in Driving Distance and ranks Top 20 in strokes gained in the opening round. Plays well on the correlation courses. Can win at huge odds.

Next Best Prop Market Bet – Tournament Match Bet Rahm v Aberg

Betting Strategy

BACK: Ludvig Aberg (at $1.60 or Better)

This is a matchup between two players in very different runs of form. Aberg comes off a second in The Masters while Rahm’s title defence was poor at Augusta. Aberg has been elite off the tee. He can be bet at $1.60 or larger in this great matchup.

When you place a lay bet, you are betting on something not to happen. Let’s think about the Melbourne Cup again. Remember: there can only be one winner. But what about the others trailing behind them? If you place a lay bet in a “Win” market, you can celebrate if the runner tails off at the back of the field.
