PGA CHAMPIONSHIP 2025 PREVIEW
Rarely has a major opened with three standout favourites in such white-hot form. Rory McIlroy will play his first major as a career Grand Slam winner after his emotional, pressure-relieving, epic win at Augusta. Scottie Scheffler endured an incredibly difficult 2024 PGA Championship when he was arrested mid-tournament but the world No.1 ended a short run of outs with a dominant win in The Byron Nelson.
Bryson DeChambeau has been in the mix in most majors over the last two years and won his most recent LIV event. There are plenty of other storylines at play too. Jordan Spieth can become the seventh career Grand Slam winner with a win.
Justin Thomas has returned to the winnerâs circle recently and can win his third PGA Championship while Brooks Koepja would join Tiger Woods with four PGA Championships with a victory – just one behind Jack Nicklaus and Walter Hagen. Xander Schauffele is hoping to defend his crown. And then there is the cadre of young guns chasing their first major win with Ludvig Aberg and Joaquin Niemann leading the charge. This is going to be an epic major championship.
QUAIL HOLLOW – COURSE OVERVIEW
Quail Hollow was opened in 1961 after being designed by George Cobb and has had two Tom Fazio touch-ups in the last 12 years to prepare it for its first two majors – the 2017 PGA Championship and this yearâs version of the PGA Championship.
It is an incredibly long course – exacerbated by being a Par 71 – and will play even longer if the rains forecast across the week hit. Fairways are on the smaller side for a regular PGA Tour event so accuracy will be important but this is a course where length off the tee is a huge advantage.
There is trouble littered across the course with water in play on seven holes while there are 60 sand bunkers across the course Paul McGinley claims is âthe equivalent of Augusta Nationalâ.
The greens have had some of their slopes flattened out to allow for more pin positions but will run quick if the sun comes out.
It is a difficult course to score on, particularly down the infamous âGreen Mileâ stretch, one of the most difficult finishes in professional golf.
The most important statistics to follow on the course are:
- Par 5 Scoring
- Driving Distance
- Strokes Gained: Off The Tee
- Bogey Avoidance
- Strokes Gained: Tee To Green
- Strokes Gained: Approach
- GIR
- Proximity
- Scrambling
- Strokes Gained: Putting
- Putting Average

Betting Strategy
BACK (WIN) Collin Morikawa at $15+
Collin Morikawaâs game is built for majors and he once again looks a good play at Quail Hollow, even though it has been a long time since he has tasted victory. In his last 16 majors, he has finished Top 16 on 12 occasions with a win and five more Top 5s. He just profiles so well again with his iron game really on song this year. He ranks 2nd in Proximity, 4th in Strokes Gained: Approach, 4th in Strokes Gained: Tee To Green and 8th in GIR while he ranks Top 15 Bogey Avoidance, Putting Average and Strokes Gained: Off The Tee.
BACK (WINNER) Justin Thomas at $21+
No major setup suits Justin Thomasâ game more than the PGA Championship and this is a tournament that has produced 22 multiple champions. Since 1998 there have been six players to win the PGA Championship on multiple occasions. Thomas is already on that list but can join the list of six others to win the championship three times. He has found form with a win and a runner-up in his last two starts and looks primed for a big week on a course he has such fond memories of.
BACK (WINNER) Shane Lowry at $34+
We are starting to see Shane Lowry return to his best and it would not shock if he was right in the cut-and-thrust of Quail Hollow. Lowry has been in super form with Top 20 finishes in 16 of his last 19 starts. He was T-2 last week at the Truist and he profiles nicely. He ranks Top 10 in Stroke Gained: Tee To Green, Strokes Gained: Approach, Proximity and Scrambling. Big hope.
LAY (WINNER) Scottie Scheffler <$9
Scheffler is the top player in the world and he profiles tremendously again this week but he is very short. He has never played Quail Hollow and the rain is going to prevent him getting a great look at it before the tournament begins. His form before his win two weeks back was also a concern. Laying him at the price.
BACK (WIINNER) Jon Rahm at $26+
Best In-Play Trading Opportunity (Back-To-Lay)
Three players in the field average over one opportunities gained in the opening round in their last 36 Round 1s: Scottie Scheffler, Jon Rahm and Keith Mitchell. Betting Scheffler to lay him is a dangerous game as he is short enough that a strong Round 1 wonât see him shorten too much. Mitchell is a big price and looks a great first round leader bet (see below). That leaves Rahm, who has not won since LIV Chicago in September last year. Playing well but just not winning.
BACK (FIRST ROUND LEADER) Keith Mitchell at $61+
Mitchell has been a revelation to first round leader bettors. He has led or been tied for the lead five times this year. His first round scoring average of 67.1 is over a shot lower than Tiger Woods in 2000. He absolutely has to be played this week.
BACK (TOP AUSTRALIAN) Min Woo Lee at $3.25+
Distance is such a major priority at Quail Hollow and of all the Aussies lining up, Min Woo Lee. He ranks 4th on Tour in Driving Distance and he backs that up ranking 12th in Strokes Gained: Putting. There is a seven-strong Aussie field here but Lee is the clear pick in this market.
Want to learn how to lay bet?
When you place a lay bet, you are betting on something not to happen. Letâs think about the Melbourne Cup again. Remember: there can only be one winner. But what about the others trailing behind them? If you place a lay bet in a âWinâ market, you can celebrate if the runner tails off at the back of the field.
