Jamie Melham’s expert steer got Cylinder home last year at $14.14 which was a huge result for Betfair punters. That price was a whopping 31.5% better than best tote post commission.

In Secret’s 2023 win for Dean Holland also produced a good price advantage, with the $7.34 BSP an impressive 13.9% better than best tote post commission.

But it’s 2022 that takes the cake! Roch’n’horse produced the huge boilover at a massive BSP of $140!.

The post commission price was 43.1% higher than best tote ($91). This equated to an extra $395 in the pocket for a $10 outlay.

SPEED MAP

Average speed expected and interestingly this is a race usually dominated by those on pace.
Growing Empire should lead. Ostraka and Arkansaw Kid handy.
Maharba, Rey Magnerio, Itsourtime, Sghirripa & Espionage  forward of midfield.
Benedetta, Stretan Angel & Joliestar back of midfield.
Gatsbys, Suparazi, Buenos Noches & Headwall out the back.

RACE PREVIEW

BENEDETTA has a very good straight track record. Inside gate doesn’t suit. BUENOS NOCHES  has an excellent straight track record, including 2nd by a nose to Giga Kick, and 2nd beaten 0.5L to Imperatriz at G1 level. First start for the Maher stable. JOLIESTAR on talent and potential deserves to be favourite. 4yos have a poor record in this race. Ticks every other box.
REY MAGNERIO ticks essentially every key historical factor desired to win this race. Goes well down the straight. This is another level for him however. GROWING EMPIRE has a very high weight for a 3yo, and is still yet to win a G1. In the mix but price looks short.
STRETAN ANGEL’S last 3 Flemington straight track runs have all been high quality, running placings beaten under 1L at G1 and G2 level.  SGHIRIPPA bolted in to win the G3 Standish this track / trip last prep. Beaten 3.6L in this race last year but more seasoned now. Can surprise.
HEADWALL was a good run beaten 2.3L in the Oakleigh Plate first up when held up in the straight. Can surprise though a strong 1200m is a query. SUPARAZI raced consistently well last prep. Not hopeless.
ESPIONAGE a talented colt who was solid first up. GATSBY’S a colt who was solid first up and only beaten 3.6L in the Coolmore in the Spring.

TOP 4 SELECTIONS

5. Joliestar
4. Buenos Noches
6. Rey Magnerio
11. Sghirippa

NEWMARKET HANDICAP TIPS

The Newmarket Handicap is one of the most prestigious horse races in Australia, held annually at Flemington Racecourse in Melbourne, Victoria. This race is a Group 1 handicap race for open class sprinters and is run over a distance of 1200 metres.

The race was first run in 1874, and since then, it has been an important fixture on the Australian racing calendar. The race was initially named after the town of Newmarket in England, where the famous Newmarket Handicap is also held. However, the Australian version was renamed the Newmarket Handicap in 1890 to avoid confusion with the English version.

Over the years, many famous horses have won the Newmarket Handicap. Some of the most notable include Black Caviar, who won the race in 2011 carrying 58 kilograms, the most weight ever carried to victory in the Newmarket Handicap. Other famous horses to have won the race include Redkirk Warrior, Sunline, Schillaci, and Shaftesbury Avenue.

Trainers and jockeys have also made their mark on the Newmarket Handicap. The late Bart Cummings is the most successful trainer in the history of the race, having won it eight times. Other successful trainers include Lee Freedman, who has won the race five times, and Gai Waterhouse, who has won it four times.

With the race attracting top-class horses, trainers, and jockeys, it is no surprise that it also attracts plenty of betting interest. Fans of horse racing who are looking to place a bet on the Newmarket Handicap have a range of options available to them, with Betfair being one of the best options.
