YORK PREVIEW AND TIPS | EXPERT TIPS | SATURDAY AUGUST 23RD 2025
 TRACK: Good to firm
If the wind brings the Saturday Southerly it may make life tough for backmarkers to get into things and give leaders and on-pacers a paradise in front.
6. Bowmark
7. Gladius
4. King’s Gambit
5. Skukuza
Betting Strategy
BACK: 6. Bowmark (WIN) for 2 units (Rated at $4.00)
Bowmark pulled up sore from his effort in the French Derby where he wasn’t able to lead and dictate terms. Prior to that he looked a smart horse and he should be able to bounce out and give them something to chase here. Previous run at York he galloped his rivals into the ground from the front in a small field and may just repeat the dose.
8. Golden Handshake
6. Many Men
10. Talismans Time
3. Tarriance
Betting Strategy
BACK: 8. Golden Handshake (WIN) for 1 unit (Rated at $5.00)
This looks ideally setup for Golden Handshake to ride just in behind the speed and improve for the rise in distance. He brings a different formline to most of these who have been running around with each other and mixing form. He looks like one who can make a long sustained run and is a promising prospect for the future.
BACK: 6. Many Men (WIN) for 1 unit (Rated at $7.00)
Many Men has been flying this season and easily has the most in the tank at the end of his races compared to this field. He’s proven at 3200m so 2800m is no issue and he moved smartly throughout before darting through the field at Ascot when saluting as favourite. Some of these have beaten him at Haydock but he finished the race right for room in the slow lane when they all swamped down the outside. When racing in fair ground he pulled out plenty to run down Novellista who has been the most solid yardstick for the formlines in this field.
2. Audience
7. Rosallion
9. Maranoa Charlie
4. Never So Brave
Betting Strategy
BACK: 2. Audience (WIN & PLACE) for 1 unit (Rated at $6.00)
When Audience has led on good ground the form reads: 112151. He hasn’t led at his last three starts and returning to that role here might be the key if the tailwind kicks up. He’s previously run a narrow second in this race too, and enjoys the track. The key for him is to steal a march on the field with his high cruising speed and have them all off and chasing as he’s done in the Lockinge and the Lennox. If he can manage that he’s a great each way shout.

BACK: 9. Maranoa Charlie (WIN & PLACE) for 1 unit (Rated at $6.00)
Only three horses have finished in front of Maranoa Charlie this season and two of those have won G1’s. He’ll enjoy being up on speed here and galloping freely compared to the bunched mess that French racing can be. He doesn’t get a mile and 1200m doesn’t let him cruise into it long enough so 1400 is ideal.

2. Hipop De Loire
6. Ethical Diamond
18. Almosh’her
17. Ascending
Betting Strategy
BACK: 2. Hipop De Loire (WIN) for 4 units (Rated at $2.80)
Hipop De Loire was arguably the worst beat this decade in this race last year. Did not get clear running at any point until the winner had just about crossed the line and still rattled home for 5th under light riding. He’s been well placed here to keep the handicap mark down and pinged around over the obstacles in Ireland to a facile success to maintain his fitness for this. The owner has signalled intent to travel to Australia and bolting in here books that ticket. The only threats here look to be traffic and the stablemate.
BACK: 6. Ethical Diamond (WIN) for 1 unit (Rated at $5.00)
Ethical Diamond is a nutter but when he settles he’s got serious gears. If he can manage to keep his lid on, he can serve it up to the stablemate and repeat the dose for the same connections as Absurde from a similar gate.
20. Chief Mankato
4. Tropical Storm
14. Jubilee Walk
13. Milford
Betting Strategy
BACK: 20. Chief Mankato (WIN & PLACE) for 1 unit (Rated at $6.00)
Chief Mankato nailed Trefor who won on the opening day of this meeting. Comes into this race in fine form, running consistently all season. Sneaks in right at the bottom of the weights and can be the knockout here.

BACK: 4. Tropical Storm (WIN & PLACE) for 1 unit (Rated at $7.00)
Tropical Storm is two from two here and the forgotten horse for the entire meeting as far as I’m concerned. He bungled the start first up and raced at the rear which is not his style, before blitzing a smart field including Star Of Mehmas (won this week at this meeting) at York next time out. That was enough to enter the G1 King Charles where he was drawn too far wide and couldn’t get involved. Most recent run he was pulled out of the race at half way and therefore that run can’t be judged on merit. I’m taking him on trust that he will produced his best here and that price is enormous.

4. Military Code
6. Silent Applause
1. Dickensian
8. Revival Power
Betting Strategy
BACK: 4. Military Code (WIN) for 3 units (Rated at $3.00)
There are bad rides, and there are whatever Military Code was given at Goodwood, restrained to be 8L slower than the main group and shunning the fast rail to boot. Delete that run from the formguide and he’s still a smart prospect who was narrowly beaten by Staya, the unlucky runner in the Lowther. A fairer track and smarter ride should see a form reversal.
BACK: 6. Silent Applause (WIN) for 2 units (Rated at $4.00)
Big lazy Silent Applause might just need Ryan Moore to wake him up for a few furlongs. He’s a talented galloper who’s put together three nice runs in a row but this is much tougher than nursery company.
1. Westridge
6. Marhaba Ghaiyyath
11. Classic Encounter
2. Sir Busker
Betting Strategy
BACK: 1. Westridge (WIN) for 3 units (Rated at $3.00)
Westridge destroyed his rivals at Goodwood and the handicap rise is probably justified. Since they’ve tinkered with the head gear he’s not missed the front two and he’s every chance of adding another win here. Ryan Moore takes over from Billy Loughnane and if he travels as stylishly as he did at the Glorious meeting he can put paid to handicap company and tackle stakes grade.
