EXPERT RACING TIPS: CHANTILLY

PRIX DU JOCKEY CLUB

Rail: True

The Prix Du Jockey Club is France’s version of the Derby, run over 2100m at Chantilly. It often favours those who aren’t likely to handle the 2400m of the Epsom Derby or Irish Derby, and is usually a rack, stack, sprint to the finish. This is even more the case when there is faster ground on offer than most of what French racing has seen early in the season with heavy track form belying true ability. Come the latter parts of the season you might find those that have dominated the scene early doors have been surpassed by horses that were getting thrashed in the months prior.

Often the inside gates are crucial here, especially over 1000m where the middle lanes of the course drain poorly. The feature itself can often be dominated by those on-speed who have an economical run throughout, and draws often play a big part. The brilliant Modern Games was brought undone by this, drawing stall 13 and running third behind Vadeni and El Bodegon in gates 2 and 1 respectively. The year prior St Mark’s Basilica stormed through the fence to win, with stalls 4 and 1 filling the placings. In 2020 Mishriff made use of barrier 3, with Victor Ludorum on the fence in 3rd from gate 1. It’s a race where wide gates struggle to have any impact.

BEST BACK OF THE DAY

BACK: Race 7 | #4 Boogie Woogie (WIN) f0r 4.5 units at $3.00

BOOGIE WOOGIE had a bit too much to do in the Alary and I think the step up in trip suits her and she should put this field away. The 2nd to Savethelastdance looks good and with a more competent steer this time she could put this field to the sword from the good gate.

Not touching this race as it’s all 2yo debutants.

5. DANCE SIOUX
1. THE FIXER
2. FLERS
3. SCAR CHOPE

Rory Flanagan’s Predictions

I’m siding with the locals here and I think their speedy 2yos have enough to hold out the UK raiders.

DANCE SIOUX was solid on debut over 1200m, but when dropped to 1000m at her second start she blitzed the field in a good time for 2yo soft track races. Drawn the fence here and that’s usually the prime real estate. Happy to invest around the $5.50 mark.

THE FIXER was too bad to be true last time out after winning his maiden by almost 9L over 900m. He was stirred up that day and didn’t give his true running. I’m happy to forgive and think the price could be generous, however the wide gate makes things tough. The first race should give some clues.

FLERS beat the same horse as Dance Sioux did, and used great gate speed to find the front and gap them. Might find it tougher here with everyone vying for the fence.

SCAR CHOPE a total x-factor thrown in the deep end.

Betting Strategy

BACK –  #5 Dance Sioux (WIN) for 2.5 units at $5.50

BACK –  #1 The Fixer (WIN) for 2 units at $7

1. SIMCA MILLE
3. HAYA ZARK
4. KERTEZ
2. MY LYKA

Rory Flanagan’s Predictions

SIMCA MILLE is the one to beat here. Should be able to dictate the race and control it from the front in a small field. Gets the right ground to be most effective too.

HAYA ZARK wants it genuinely soggy so I can’t see an upset. Price is rock bottom to be taking about the favourite though.

No bets.

8. AMERICAN FLAG
9. CONTINUOUS
11. BIG ROCK
5. FEED THE FLAME

Rory Flanagan’s Predictions

This is a chance for redemption for AMERICAN FLAG. An extra 500m in distance should suit, and wide draws in this race are often a death sentence. All chance of winning was lost in the first 50m ast start when flopping out the back with zero intent and hoping for a pace to aim at. He had thrashed the French Guineas winner the start prior, but gave away an unassailable lead in the rematch so some positivity from barrier 3 is essential in him running to the best of his ability.

CONTINUOUS was very good in the Dante and is ideally drawn to settle in the first four from the inside gate. That form has been franked by White Birch running a bold 3rd in the Derby, and this Japanese-bred type wasn’t fully fit that day either so I expect even more improvement from him. There’s also the added boost of being comfortable on this surface when most of the field have contested soggy ground in the first part of this season.

BIG ROCK has been gifted some races on a silver platter this prep, but he’s still gone about it in a professional manner. He only knows one way and that is jumping to the front and kicking clear. If they finally decide to take him on it’ll be a truly run race that will bring the backmarkers into play. If he gets a soft lead, he won’t lose.

FEED THE FLAME has been supplemented for this after two slick wins and is the next best chance outside the top 3.

Betting Strategy

BACK –  #8 American Flag (WIN) for 1 unit at $15
BACK – #9 Continuous (WIN) for 2.5 units at $5

2. SAUTERNE
4. SPIRIT GAL
7. PAZ
6. CALISTOGA

Rory Flanagan’s Predictions

ZARINSK is a leader-only top. She’s only won when given a soft lead and I’m not sure she’s going to get that here as she’s only ever managed to find the front from inside draws. As a result I think she’s the wrong price and SAUTERNE is the one to beat after a fine 3rd in the French 1000 Guineas. She’s got an ideal gate and will attempt to see off Zarinsk for the lead.

SPIRIT GAL is another who is capable of making all and will still sit handy if she doesn’t find the front. She had to work to negate the track bias last time and ran a bold 3rd. She is the value here

PAZ and CALISTOGA step up in grade after fighting out the finish last time. PAZ is the better horse and came storming from the rear to dive and just miss in that race. Could be suited here with the tempo potentially hot.

Betting Strategy

BACK – #2 Sauterne (WIN) for 2 units at $6

BACK – #7 Paz (WIN) for 1 unit at $11

BACK – #4 Spirit Gal (WIN) for 1 unit at $11

4. BOOGIE WOOGIE
7. FRENCH BOB
3. ENGALIWE
6. HIGGLE

Rory Flanagan’s Predictions

BOOGIE WOOGIE had a bit too much to do in the Alary and I think the step up in trip suits her and she should put this field away. The 2nd to Savethelastdance looks good and with a more competent steer this time she could put this field to the sword from the good gate.

FRENCH BOB had to battle in the slow lane last time but got a second wind late on. The step up in trip is ideal for him based on that run and he should do no work in the run from the inside gate.

ENGALIWE tackles tougher company after putting a picket fence together whilst HIGGLE can be hit or miss and needs a PB to win this.

Betting Strategy

BACK – #4 Boogie Woogie (WIN) for 4.5 units at $3.00

BACK: #7 French Bob (WIN) for 1.5 units at $7.00

7. PILLOW TALK
3. DEMAIN
6. PERDIKA
10. ZUDU SPIRIT

Rory Flanagan’s Predictions

I expect this to be fought out along the fence with PILLOW TALK having too much for the up and coming DEMAIN.

PERDIKA is absolutely flying but it’s tough to win from out wide and there isn’t enough gate speed to cross.

Betting Strategy

BACK – #7 Pillow Talk (WIN) for 2.5 units at $4.00

9. GET AHEAD
11. MARSHMAN
2. COUER DE PIERRE
6. FORZA CAPITANO

Rory Flanagan’s Predictions

This is a tough test for MARSHMAN to try and offset the gate. He’s the best horse in this race but has been caught out by track bias at his last start and looks like copping it once more here. If he can fly the lids and get across to the fence it’s likely they won’t catch him as he looks to contest either the King’s Stand or the Commonwealth Cup at Royal Ascot.

GET AHEAD has been crunched since markets opened on account of the draw.

Betting Strategy

BACK – #9 Get Ahead (WIN) for 1 unit

BACK – #6 Forza Capitano (WIN) for 0.5 units
