CANTERBURY EXPERT RACING TIPS
The Canterbury Park Racecourse is rich in history, beginning in 1852 at the property of Cornelius Proud, who built a racetrack on his existing land and began holding races for the locals. In 1871 Frederick Clissold and Thomas Austin Davis held a race meeting on land leased by Davis within the vicinity of Prouds racecourse. In 1884 an official racecourse was constructed on the leased land by Frederick Clissold and Thomas Austin Davis comprising a 700 person grandstand and a recreational park. The first official race meeting at the new Canterbury Park Race Club was held on 19 January 1884, with an approximate attendance of 3000 people. From there the track only grew in popularity, so much so that construction on a train line began in 1892 and was completed in 1895 to make it more accessible for patrons, trainers, horses and jockeys.
Today, Canterbury Park Racecourse hosts purely midweek and night race meets (as Randwick is the host of all the feature races in Sydney) and is still a popular racing venue for racing enthusiasts and the like. Located only a 15 minute drive outside the Sydney CBD, Canterbury Park Racecourse is extremely accessible for punters, much like the Canterbury tips on the Betfair Hub. Betfair is an industry leader in racing content and tips, which goes with their renowned reputation as the best odds in the betting market. Not only this, but Betfair’s Canterbury racing experts provide best bets, key selections, and in-depth analysis for each meeting.
Throughout the Great Depression the racecourse took a big hit in attendance numbers, meaning the Canterbury Park owners, the Associated Racing Clubs (ARC), sold the racecourse to the Sydney Turf Club (STC) at the beginning of 1945, 7 months before the end of World War II. The STC also held their first race meeting in January of 1945, and were the sole owners of the race club until they merged with the Australian Jockey Club in 2011, becoming the Australian Turf Club (ATC).
Canterbury racecourse has been the site of many innovations: the first photo finish camera in 1946, the first mobile barrier stalls in Sydney in 1948, the first metropolitan racing success for a woman trainer in 1957, Sydney’s first TAB meeting in 1964, and the first night racing meeting in Sydney in 1999. Much like Canterbury, the team at Betfair are always looking to innovate when it comes to wagering content, with new Canterbury racing tips available for each and every meeting only on the Betfair Hub.
