EXPERT RACING TIPS: SANDOWN

SANDOWN PREVIEW AND TIPS | EXPERT TIPS | WEDNESDAY JUNE 5TH 2024

RAIL: 3m TRACK: Good 4

A quick back-up for the Lakeside track, which is in use again from the Sunday meeting, where it had 5 flat races on it. The rail was in the true there and moves out 3m, it played very firm and fast on Sunday, so I expect making ground to be a tough challenge on Wednesday.

BACK: 4. Fontaine Rouge (WIN) for 5 units (Rated at $1.44)

As confident as I get here with Fontaine Rouge. She was $2.2-1.4 in late betting on debut, overraced between horses for 400m, lost all momentum on the turn and still flew home in the second-fastest last 100m split of the meeting. The second horse has bolted in a maiden since and even the horse who finish last has won since. Up in trip suits should win.

Red Galaxy had all favours on debut and it was a bunched finish, Buzz City regressed badly last start, did have the crossover first time, gets that off so maybe some excuse there.

3. Golden Warrior
2. Omanyala
1. Just For Show
4. War Council

Betting Strategy

Tricky race, Golden Warrior was given no winning chance on debut at Warrnambool given the pattern of the meeting, he bolted in at Ballarat last start but that was in a five-horse field on the synthetic, back on turf now.

Omanyala has plenty of upside, Shinn on an obviously positive and Just For Show has to be somewhere around the mark too but probably without the upside of the other two mentioned.

6. Hypeman
5. Kirin
4. Patchouli Dream
3. Arizona Activist

Betting Strategy

Hypeman on top but not trilled at the current $3.6 quote. He produced a really solid rating winning his maiden two back then last start, the run was probably better than it looked, as Cranbourne got significant rain in the last hour of that meeting, it was more like a S7-H8 and the inside wasn’t the place to be, the one to beat.

Kirin was really strong on debut, the figures and sectionals weren’t anything to rave about but the win likely had more merit, better with a sit. Arizona Activist is likely fresh only, regressed again second-up, the winkers go on but I feel that is a throw at the stumps.

6. Somebodytolove
5. Nusumi
9. Yototsu
2. Furlantetto

Betting Strategy

BACK: 6. Somebodytolove (WIN) for 3 units (Rated at $2.20)

I backed Somebodytolove first-up and the market was very keen as well. I was disappointed in the performance as they crossed the line but looking at the data in my view, she actually resumed with a career PB rating and she just got outsprinted off a slow tempo first-up at 1300m, she still ran the 11th-fastest last 100m split of the meeting in restricted room and the step up to the mile is the big tick for her.

Nusumi has plenty of ability, she bumped into a handy one in Roadcone and did have no luck on debut then won with a looping run at Wangaratta, just worried about the map and pattern for her.

1. Jaykayann
8. Derozario
5. Morrissette
3. Sky Horse

Betting Strategy

Jaykayann was a notable drifter on Betfair in the last 10 minutes of betting at Cranbourne last start and the market knew all about the stablemate rolling forward while she settled last. She ran hooning closing splits home again but is likely to be out the back again, watch late betting.

3. She’s A Con
1. Binding
10. Mere Fancy
11. Fine Rebel

Betting Strategy

She’s A Con interests me, I thought the jumpout prior fo the first-up run was good, the closing splits in limited room was also good. Binding is a Freedman horse down from Queensland with decent numbers but 62.5kg and I don’t like Kah on a horse with a big weight. I thought the last two jumpouts were just fair, very interested to watch the late betting.

7. Riproar
1. Angry Skies
10. Chill The Krug
2. Calico Jack

Betting Strategy

BACK: 7. Riproar (WIN) for 2 units (Rated at $4.60)

Riproar has never been one of mine but looks too big in betting. His rating two back on a dry deck at Caulfield was really solid, although in the right spot vs race shape. I’m happy to forgive his last start at Flemington, where he was wide, no cover on speed in a swoopers race, D.Lane goes back on and the map is perfect.

Calico Jack found the best lanes last start, although so did British Angel and that didn’t stop her winning in town on Saturday, El Rocko likely needs it wetter and I’m against Fly Lie staying at 1400m second-up.

7. Oak Hill
13. Gracie’s Rain
1. Epic Centre
5. Artistic Genius

Betting Strategy

I found the market in this race. Oak Hill overraced horribly first-up and still absolutely bolted in this track and trip and D.Lane sticks. Gracie’s Rain will be fitter, the run first-up probably better than it looked but the market hasn’t missed her either.

When you place a lay bet, you are betting on something not to happen. Let’s think about the Melbourne Cup again. Remember: there can only be one winner. But what about the others trailing behind them? If you place a lay bet in a “Win” market, you can celebrate if the runner tails off at the back of the field.
