NEWBURY TIPS AND PREVIEWS
RAIL: True TRACK: Good
Should race evenly and fairly, one of the UK’s better and underrated, underutilised tracks.
1. Al Aasy
3. El Cordobes
5. King’s Gambit
8. Tabletalk
Betting Strategy
BACK: 1. Al Aasy (WIN) for 5 units (Rated at $2.50)
AL AASY bounced back in a big way at Sandown and now returns to his favourite course where he’s never missed a place and has won four times. Back up to his pet distance, he can tank into proceedings on the bridle and romp this once more, having won the 2021 renewal on the snaff in first gear.
9. Symbol Of Honour
5. Ides Of March
2. Berkshire Whisper
4. Defence Minister
Betting Strategy
BACK: 9. Symbol Of Honour (WIN) for 2 units (Rated at $3.60)
This is a substantial price discrepancy about Symbol Of Honour whose Dubai form is excellent (beat subsequent G1 winner easily) and well and truly capable of taking this. Down to 1200m suits having wet the bet over 1400m uphill at Newmarket. Should be a much easier track to handle and I expect to see him fight out the finish.
3. Saddadd
2. Geneaology
7. Wave Rider
10. Lightening Mann
Betting Strategy
BACK: 3 Saddadd (WIN) for 2 units (Rated at $3.50)
Saddadd was a bit chunky first time out and needed the run. He was looked after late on, and could have finished a lot closer if asked. He’ll be fitter now and shows he handles the track whilst others are coming from a mixed bag of synthetic form, Newmarket form or tight turning leaderish tracks. Happy to have him on top.
BACK: 2. Geneaology (WIN) for 2 units (Rated at $3.50)
Geneaology produced an absurd final furlong to claim his maiden before crumbling in the deep end at Newmarket next time out. A big field, in a race that’s often won by those near the top of the weights he should get a chance to chase down some decent pace and prove he belongs in group company.
4. Notable Speech
7. Rosallion
2. Dancing Gemini
8. Fallen Angel
Betting Strategy
BACK: 4. Notable Speech (WIN) for 3 units (Rated at $3.50)
It’s been 333 days but finally we get the rematch of the St James’s Palace Stakes where Rosallion took the scalp of the previously undefeated Notable Speech. Rosallion was scratched from Goodwood where Notable Speech romped home, and hasn’t been seen since.
Notable Speech went to France and was given a stinker in the wet, out the back on a leader’s highway before Buick missed the boat at Del Mar in the Breeders Cup beaten half a length.
He’s suited to being held onto and then producing a stunning turn of foot – which Rosallion had no answer for in the 2000 Guineas.
If there’s a pace here, he’s the one to beat.
10. Wonder Star
7. Revoir
9. Winter’s Song
4. Likealot
Betting Strategy
BACK: 10 Wonder Star (WIN) for 1 unit (Rated at $5.00)
Backing 10, 7, 9.
Couldn’t have those shorter in the market but the prices are too large to lay for me so I’m spreading single stakes over the three that I fancy.
WONDER STAR showed big improvement from start one to two, soft to dry by romping in at Ascot. Crossed from wide that day and made a mess of them with a sustained effort to the line. Could repeat the dose here.
BACK: 7. Revoir (WIN) for 1 unit (Rated at $5.00)
Granted she won on heavy on debut but it was stylish and there looked to be a massive engine. The price here is bigger than the stablemate because of jockey bookings but I’d lean to the one proven on turf vs synthetic.
BACK: 9. Winter’s Song (WIN) for 1 unit (Rated at $5.00)
Winter’s Song ran 2nd to Tattycoram whilst carrying a penalty and needing the run. Tattycoram went almost 11 seconds below standard time in front and Buick showed no initiative to fix that and was dictated to. Prior to that she thrashed Tattycoram who couldn’t lead at a better tempo in the Musidora the other day.
She’s much better than her price.
4. Completely Random
6. Elmonjed
8. Indian Run
1. Cover Up
Betting Strategy
Not much to go off unless a clear prevalent bias. Sit out an open race.
8. My Cloud
2. Witch Hunter
1. Ancient Rome
7. EBT’s Guard
Betting Strategy
BACK: 8 My Cloud (WIN) for 5 units (Rated at $2.00)
My Cloud is unbeaten at the mile, and produced two differing wins for both 1600m starts. A 13L thrashing at Newcastle from the front end, before returning this prep at Ascot coming from off the pace and dashing away to win by nearly 4L. He looks a handicap special who will be in group company soon enough.
4. Regalian
6. Shameful
3. Nakeeb
10. Solar Army
Betting Strategy
So many similar types. No standout. No bet.
