EXPERT RACING TIPS: DONCASTER

ST LEGER FESTIVAL DAY 3

Rail: TBC | Stalls: Straight – Centre; 1m2f – Outside; 1m6f – Inside

Track Condition: Soft, rain forecast | Expected Advantage: See Turftrax

The St Leger Festival is back once more and it’s likely to be a soggy affair. I’m confident the mudlarks will come to the fore and markets are likely to be priced on the firm track form that has been present for much of the feature meetings this season bar Goodwood.
There is a host of smart 2yos on show as well as staying features like the Doncaster Cup, Park Hill Stakes and of course the St Leger.

BACK: #5 Spycatcher (WIN) for 4 units

SPYCATCHER should lap up this ground and prove very hard to beat if repeating the Prix De Gheest run. He was touched off narrowly in that G1 and this is much, much easier than that. Clear favourite here against a majority of dry track types who all profile similarly, and SANDRINE who is out of form.

RACE 1 | KEY SELECTIONS

4. ROSALLION
1. IBERIAN
2. MOUNTAIN BEAR
5. SUNWAY

Betting Strategy

BACK: #1 Iberion (WIN) for 1 unit

Yet to see ROSALLION tested with soft going underfoot, so there might be an angle to take it on with IBERIAN who simply had too much to do at Goodwood when bungling the start and will be suited by this track. With a clean break, I think he can test the odds on favourite.

If you like Rosallion it’s probably better to just back for the 2000 Guineas instead as you’re getting no price here and that is what he’s being trained for.

LAY: #4 Rosallion (WIN) for 2 units

RACE 2 | KEY SELECTIONS

2. KING’S LYNN
5. DAKOTA GOLD
18. DUSKY LORD
19. CALL ME GINGER

Betting Strategy

BACK: #2 King’s Lynn (WIN) for 2 units

Happy to angle for some value here with DAKOTA GOLD and DUSKY LORD. The former has 10 wins on soft ground and likes this track whilst the latter returns to the headgear setup that brought success at his previous stable.

KING’S LYNN has run top two on four occasions here from five starts and will relish the ground. Oisin booked but does carry a larger weight. Hardest to beat with clear running.

CALL ME GINGER the form pick with back to back successes and won this in the stewards’ room last season.

BACK: #19 Dusky Lord (EACH-WAY) for 0.5 units

BACK: #5 Dakota Gold (EACH-WAY) for 0.5 units

RACE 3 | KEY SELECTIONS

5. SPYCATCHER
1. AUDIENCE
6. SANDRINE
2. BIGGLES

BACK: #5 Spycatcher (WIN) for 4 units

SPYCATCHER should lap up this ground and prove very hard to beat if repeating the Prix De Gheest run. He was touched off narrowly in that G1 and this is much, much easier than that. RACE 4 | KEY SELECTIONS

6. DESERT HERO
8. MIDDLE EARTH
2. ARREST
4. CONTINUOUS

Betting Strategy

BACK: #6 Desert Hero (WIN) for 2.5 units

Got the feeling we’ve not yet seen DESERT HERO hit his peak and it could come here against the Gosden and O’Brien hordes who hold 7 entries between them. The horse has savaged the line in all races bar one, and will surely relish the testing tempo that Coolmore are likely to put on here for Continuous. He’s won on a heavy track so I have no fears about the conditions.

MIDDLE EARTH to me felt like he needed a trip and cut in the ground. He’s had that now and built on early promise to record back to back wins. Hasn’t done the ratings figures yet but this race has been the target for over a year and the Melrose success oozed class.

ARREST is the pick of the Godolphin pair based on ground as he doesn’t go a yard on dry tracks. Gregory seems the opposite with him faltering in the wet.

CONTINUOUS stormed to victory from the back of the field in the Great Voltigeur so my expectation is Coolmore attempt to repeat the dose and push the pace with Denmark and Alexandroupolis to set things up. Only soft ground run was a narrow success in France and has ducked wet tracks since.

BACK: #8 Middle Earth (WIN) for 1.5 units

RACE 5 | KEY SELECTIONS

3. LA YAKEL
2. AKHU NAJLA
1. SYMBOL OF LIGHT
4. SIMPLY SONDHEIM

Betting Strategy

LA YAKEL was given a ride for the ages at Ascot and whilst the level of pilot error was astronomical, I can’t trust him to get his nose in front. Happy to sit out of this.

RACE 6 | KEY SELECTIONS

3. DEIRA MILE
1. BELLUM JUSTUM
4. LET’S GET EM
10. OTTO FLASH

Betting Strategy

Wide open maiden. Not interested.

RACE 7 | KEY SELECTIONS

7. SPIRIT CATCHER
10. LIBERTY LANE
11. PISANELLO
14. SPIORADALTA

Betting Strategy

BACK: #7 Spirit Catcher (EACH-WAY) for 1 unit

SPIRIT CATCHER ran a great race at York and only rises marginally in the weights for that. If it were wetter, I think he’d have won that day and now gets to make amends on a soft surface having only ever run one poor race from six in the wet.

LIBERTY LANE bolted up by 5L on debut and hasn’t seen soft ground since. The form has been a total mixed bag and perhaps returning to these conditions will bring out a PB.

PISANELLO has been lumping massive weights at his last six starts and finally drops to what will feel like a featherweight 56kg. Soft ground not an issue and his straight course form is deceptively better than it appears.

SPIORADALTA a mudlark knockout hope if it turns into an attritionaltest of stamina as late and over the top is his run style

BACK: #10 Liberty Lane (WIN) for 1 unit

BACK: #11 Pisanello (EACH-WAY) for 0.5 units

BACK: #14 Spioradalta (EACH-WAY) for 0.5 units
