In February 2024, the Victorian Gambling and Casino Control Commission introduced a prohibition to limit betting on the performance of individual players who are under 18 (New Prohibition). For more information on the New Prohibition, click this Link.
As a result of the New Prohibition, certain betting markets will not include any ‘minor’ participants. A minor is a person under the age of 18 at the start of an event.
WHICH SPORTS ARE IMPACTED?
Sports played in Australia and New Zealand where individual player markets are offered and minors are allowed to participate (including, for example, tennis, golf, cricket etc.).
WHICH MARKETS ARE IMPACTED?
Individual player markets where minors are allowed to participate (Impacted Markets) (including, for example, outright winner markets, match markets, highest score markets etc.).
HOW ARE MARKETS IMPACTED?
In preparing the Market Information for Impacted Markets where at least one of the participants is a ‘minor’, Betfair has taken into account the New Prohibition.
Betfair encourages customers to review the Market Information for a market before placing a bet on that market. Market Information can be accessed by clicking on the rules icon.
On reviewing the Market Information for each Impacted Market, customers will see that the market will not include any minor participants. Examples of the approach that may be taken by Betfair in relation to Impacted Markets are set out below. Note – the below information does not form part of the Market Information for a market and, as noted above, customers should review the Market Information for a market before placing a bet on that market.
EXAMPLES OF THE APPROACH THAT MAY BE TAKEN
Impacted Market | Management of the Impacted Market |
Outright winner markets (e.g. winner of the 2025 Women’s Australian Open Tennis) | If a minor reaches the final, then all bets on the outright winner market will be voided. The market will be suspended at the point it is known that a minor will be in the final;
All players that are knocked out, withdraw or are disqualified during the Main Draw of the tournament will be hidden from the market, until there are no minors left in the tournament, when they will be settled as a loser, unless a minor reaches the final, in which case all bets will be voided on the market; and partial settlements and cash out will only become available when there are no minors left in the market.
|
Individual player markets (e.g. highest run scorer in a cricket match) | If a minor finishes in the top position, then all bets on the individual player market will be voided. The market will be suspended at the point it is known that a minor will finish in the top position.
|
Match markets (e.g. Round 1 of the 2025 Women’s Australian Open Tennis) | Markets will not be available for any match where a minor is competing. |
