Head-to-Head Markets

The Betfair Insider has previewed the five H2H markets that we have for this market on the Exchange. Check out his expert analysis for all of them below and then Back and Lay them on the Exchange.

Alligator Blood v Melody Belle

The two at the top of the market are set to take each other on for the first time, in what Alligator Blood’s trainer has quoted “the best field Alligator Blood has competed in.” Melody Belle sits atop the 3yo’s rivals as the NZ mare already has 10 Group 1’s to her name. She has also proven a force to be reckoned down-under claiming the Empire Rose before putting in a massive figure in the Mackinnon Stakes.

The bombproof Alligator Blood has been up a long time and whilst he certainly has the ability to get the job done, he will have to overcome a tough draw deep into his prep. The narrative is much the opposite for Melody Belle who will jump from 5 and will lead a deep crop of threats to the Gators’ crown. I definitely see him as vulnerable and am happy to take on.

Suggested Bet

BACK (WIN) – I’m happy to be with Melody Belle in a Head-to-Head bet at 2.50 or more.

Fierce Impact v Mr Quickie

Originally I was very keen to take Fierce Impact in this match-up but the poor barrier draw has somewhat swayed me. That being said I’m surprised how short Mr Quickie has come up. There’s no doubting his talent and I assume a lot of the support has come due to his eye-catching performance in the Makybe Diva Stakes. He’s also trialed well in between preps, so there is more than one reason to be excited.

However, I can’t go past Fierce Impact in this one. He already has feature mile wins in the Toorak and Cantala under his belt.  Plus, he has another two Group 1 placings this prep. If Craig Williams is able to do him any favours from the bad draw I think he will be right in the finish. Let alone able to get the better of Mr Quickie.

Suggested Bet

BACK (WIN) – Fierce Impact in a Head-to-Head bet at 1.80 or more.

Flit v Kolding

Stat Godolphin filly, Flit returned in style winning the Light Fingers comfortably before going on to get run down in the Surround Stakes. There’s certainly an argument to be made for her at her best, but she is coming up against one of the star middle-distance horses of the spring in this matchup and she has to do it from barrier 15.

As for Kolding, he has been somewhat underwhelming in his return. He hit the line well first-up over 1200m in the Expressway before a fairly average performance in the Futurity where the race pattern didn’t suit. The 4yo worked in blinkers last week and I’m tipping a gear change may be on the cards for the gelding. He’ll have the advantage form the draw, and with the blinkers looming, I’m happy to be in his camp as Waller looks to get his prep back on track.

Suggested Bet

BACK (WIN) – Kolding in a Head-to-Head bet at anything over $1.50

Regal Power v Superstorm

West is best and we get two of the states finest here with Regal Power and Superstorm. Pike’s decision to ride Regal Power instead of Super Storm certainly is an interesting one, claiming he made the decision by flipping a coin (we’re laying that took place). As such, Mark Zahra takes the ride on Superstorm. There isn’t much between them though leading into this and the market reflects that as well. Regal Power traded $1.02 in the Australian Cup and finished 2nd to Fifty Stars. Superstorm probably makes it a proper race if it wasn’t trailing Catalyst in the Australian Guineas.

The form for both is sound and they’re great chances of winning. We’re sticking with Superstorm here though in this H2H. First time at Caulfield doesn’t worry me and from the wide barrier, he’ll find a handy spot not too far off them and will be charging late.

Suggested Bet

BACK (WIN) – Superstorm in a Head-to-Head bet at anything over $2.00

Streets of Avalon v Black Heart Bart

Two more wild cards who have made the field here. Both are long odds to win the race but there looks a bit of value in their H2H match up.

Black Heart Bart’s return wasn’t completely terrible, putting up respectable sectionals in the last 400 of the Futurity Stakes. However, Streets of Avalon stole the show last start, beating home Super Seth and Melody Belle in the same race. It was suited perfectly for him that day so it’s hard to expect a similar performance in this race to win it.

Streets of Avalon will be able to lead and do whatever he wants in this race with not a lot of speed to challenge him. Black Heart Bart probably needs a slow tempo to win this H2H and I think that’s what we will get here. I like Black Heart Bart in this H2H.

Suggested Bet

BACK (WIN) – Black Heart Bart at anything over $2.00
