Circle of Fire got it done in 2024 at the handy price of $6.60, which edged best tote by 2% post commission.

Explosive Jack got up at the massive price of $21.64 in 2023, which was on parity with the competition.

Knights Order won at $8.71 in 2022, which was also on relative parity.

SPEED MAP

Everyone will be looking and waiting for Tim Clark to work across on ALACANCE here from barrier 15. This mare has led and dominated from the front in her three runs this campaign, stepping up in trip and handling it well each time. RIVER OF STARS has speed, leading the Tancred. ARAPAHO handy, and DUKE DE SESSA getting a perfect run just in behind.

SYDNEY CUP | RACE PREVIEW

Amazingly, there are not many horses here with 3200m form.

#8 ALALCANCE is clearly the horse to beat here. She walloped 11 of her rivals in the G2 Chairmans at 2600m and showed no sign of stopping. Amazingly, she meets all 11 better at the weights, dropping a whopping 6.5kg off that performance. Her start prior, she won the 2400m Manion Cup in outstanding fashion, again beating a huge number of her rivals she meets today. The 3200m is obviously another query and she is untried at the trip but off what we have seen, it would be a brave person to suggest she won’t run it out strongly. #15 BIRDMAN is another horse with upside and he was probably the pick of the others in that Chairmans. He has a sense of timing about him here, peaking in the right camp at the right time. Fastest final 600 and 400m in the Chairmans, gets in with a light weight and saves plenty of ground from barrier 1. Loved the run of #10 CLEVELAND in that Manion Cup, running fourth. He was off fence there and not suited, but kept coming and ran a really good race. He was first-up there and returning as a gelding which we think can make a big difference rising up to the 3200m. Winner over 3750m and should get a suitable race to show his best. Wish he drew better but like the Jamie Melham booking.

#1 DUKE DE SESSA brings different form and adds huge interest. Brilliant in a Tancred, running second behind Dubai Honour. Query at the 3200m, particularly conceding weight to the field but if there is money for him, be very wary. 5 others through the Tancred. #4 CIRCLE OF FIRE is the only one through that race who ticks the 3200m box and he is worth respecting. He drops 4kg through that race.

#6 ZARDOZI is another with different form. Not convinced she has a solid grounding for the 3200m but she did run 4th in a Melbourne Cup, showing she stays. Afterthought? It has been over 12 months since she won a race and would like to see her do so before betting.

SYDNEY CUP TIPS

The Sydney Cup is one of Australia’s most iconic staying contests and a true highlight of Day 2 of The Championships at Royal Randwick. Run over a grueling 3200 metres, it tests not only the stamina of its contenders but also the nerve of punters chasing value in a race that often throws up surprises. Whether you’re a seasoned punter or a casual viewer placing a few wagers for the big day, having access to insightful Sydney Cup tips can make all the difference.

As one of the few two-mile races on the Australian calendar, the Sydney Cup presents a unique challenge in both form analysis and betting strategy. Horses arrive from varied lead-up races, some stepping out of weight-for-age contests, others coming through traditional handicaps or international campaigns. That variety in form lines, combined with big fields and tricky barriers, means it’s a race that rewards deep research and smart predictions.

At Betfair, our racing tips are built to go beyond the obvious. We’re not just looking at favourites or the last-start winners—we’re unpacking tempo maps, sectionals, rider tactics, and track patterns to deliver angles that other punters might miss. Our expert contributors understand that staying races like this one demand more than a glance at the form guide. It’s about knowing which horses are bred to run out the trip, who has been set for the race months in advance, and which runners may be peaking at just the right time.

Betfair operates differently to traditional bookmakers, and that’s an advantage to smart punters. Because we’re a betting exchange, the focus isn’t on boosting margins—it’s about creating markets where punters can find genuine value. This makes our Sydney Cup tips especially relevant for those looking to back at better prices or lay runners they think are vulnerable over the two miles. With the ability to trade in-play, Betfair users also benefit from live market action that reflects every move on the track in real time.

When it comes to finding the best bets in the Sydney Cup, it’s often about identifying horses who will settle well, stay the trip, and be suited by race shape. It’s not unusual to see big upsets in this race, and our expert analysis is focused on pointing you to runners that may be overlooked but are capable of a bold showing at a big price. From early week previews to late mail closer to the jump, our coverage aims to keep you informed as new information unfolds.

Every edition of the Sydney Cup tells its own story. Some years, internationals dominate. Other times, tough local stayers prove too seasoned. Either way, there’s always a few key clues in the lead-up if you know where to look—and our job is to help you find them. We assess trial form, trackwork, historical trends, and betting moves to bring you well-rounded, practical insights.

Our Sydney Cup tips will be regularly updated as the race draws closer, ensuring you have access to the latest opinions and changes in the market. Whether you’re looking for a top pick, a roughie with upside, or trading opportunities on the exchange, Betfair is the place to stay one step ahead.
