February 8, 7:15pm SCG

Match Overview

It’s all come down to this with the two top sides from the regular season – the Sydney Sixers and Melbourne Stars – playing off for the BBL09 title at what is set to be a soggy SCG on Saturday night.

The Sixers booked their place in the finale last Friday when they accounted for the Stars by 43 runs in the Qualifier at the MCG. Having lost the toss and been sent into bat the Magenta Men failed to capitalise on a bright start from ‘keeper-batsman Josh Philippe (34 off 28 balls) as they sunk from 1/54 in the eighth over to a pedestrian total of 7/142 from their 20 overs. However Sydney’s bowlers then galvanised and produced arguably their best effort of the season, knocking the minor premiers over for just 99 with the returning Sean Abbott straight back into the action with 3/23 off four overs.

With their season on the line the Stars produced a much more convincing display with the bat in Thursday night’s Challenger against the Sydney Thunder, amassing an immense 2/194 thanks mainly to 117-run stand between commanding opener Marcus Stoinis (83 off 54 balls) and the merging Nick Larkin who enjoyed his best ever BBL outing with an unbeaten 83 off just 49 deliveries.

In reply the Thunder were never seriously in the hunt, losing wickets at regular intervals as the run rate required continued to climb, eventually landing on 8/166 with Pakistani sensation Haris Rauf claiming 3/17 off four overs.

Unfortunately the forecast for Saturday is pretty grim with plenty of rain expected and No Completed Match a short price, however if you don’t fancy studying the radar, then in the event that they do somehow get a game in I believe a shortened match will significantly favour the Stars, who boast an unbalanced yet more explosive batting unit and bowling attack in comparison to the Sixers’ who strength is their depth and reliability across the board.
