Day Four

JCB Triumph Hurdle (Grade 1) (1) 2m179y – 12.30am AEDT

Betting Forecast

$2.25 Sir Erec, $9.5 Pic d’Orhy, $9.5 Quel Destin, $15 Gardens of Babylon, $15 Tiger Tap Tap, $17 Adjali, $19 Pentland Hills, $29 Coeur Sublime, $41 Hannon, $51 Authorizo, $51 French Made, $67 Ecco, $67 Runrized, $81 Nelson River

Betting Strategy

The fact that Sir Erec managed to finish placed in Group 2 company on just his fifth Flat start marks him down as out of the ordinary for the division and his easy Spring Juvenile Hurdle win (by 6 lengths from Gardens of Babylon) is the best form on offer. The Paul Nicholls trained pair Quel Destin and Pic d’Orhy have had contrasting preparations for this but both are interesting.

 BACK (WIN) – Sir Erec

Randox Health County Handicap Hurdle (Grade 3) (1) 2m179y – 1.10am AEDT

Betting Forecast

$9 Whiskey Sour, $13 Crooks Peak, $15 Capitaine, $15 Ch’tibello, $17 Monsieur Lecoq, $17 Mr Adjudicator, $19 Western Ryder, $21 Eclair de Beaufeu, $23 Countister, $23 Cut The Mustard, $26 Leoncavallo, $26 Lisp, $26 Mohaayed, $29 Ar Mest, $29 Mitchouka, $29 Storm Rising, $29 We Have A Dream, $34 Bar

Betting Strategy

The assessor didn’t have a lot to go on when allotting Crooks Peak’s opening mark and he took full advantage at Newbury a fortnight ago. Given he was value for extra and promises to be suited by this big-field environment, the follow up under a 5 lb penalty is a distinct possibility. Whiskey Sour was third in this a year ago and has been aimed at this, while Monsieur Lecoq is going the right way.

 BACK (WIN) – Crooks Peak’s

Albert Bartlett Novices’ Hurdle (Spa) (Grade 1) (1) – 1.50am AEDT

Betting Forecast

$5.5 Commander of Fleet, $6 Birchdale, $10 Dickie Diver, $10 Lisnagar Oscar, $11 Rhinestone, $12 Allaho, $15 Dinons, $26 Derrinross, $34 Stoney Mountain, $41 Ask Ben, $41 First Approach, $51 Aye Aye Charlie, $51 Cap York, $51 Nadaitak, $67 Dorrells Pierji, $67 Minella Indo, $67 Salsaretta, $81 Alsa Mix, $81 Rockpoint, $151 Darlac

Betting Strategy

Traditionally a treacherous race for favourites and with that in mind it could pay to side with the experienced Dinons, who won here in October and who is easily excused his latest run when bidding for a 6-timer. Birchdale, Commander of Fleet and Dickie Diver are among the many others with bags of potential who should feature. Stoney Mountain is one to consider at a huge price.

 BACK (WIN) – Dinons

Magners Cheltenham Gold Cup Chase (Grade 1) (1) 3¼m70y – 2.30am AEDT

Betting Forecast

$4.5 Presenting Percy, $5 Native River, $7 Clan des Obeaux, $13 Kemboy, $15 Bellshill, $21 Bristol de Mai, $21 Might Bite, $21 Thistlecrack, $26 Al Boum Photo, $26 Anibale Fly, $34 Elegant Escape, $34 Invitation Only, $34 Shattered Love, $67 Definitly Red, $201 Yala Enki, $301 Double Shuffle

Betting Strategy

Native River can become the first back-to-back winner since the legendary Best Mate. He showed great toughness when getting the better of Might Bite 12 months ago and looks ready to peak once more having not been seen in the best light in his 2 runs since. Presenting Percy, seeking his third straight Festival victory, looks the biggest danger ahead of the progressive Kemboy.

 BACK (WIN) – Native River

St. James’s Place Foxhunter Challenge Cup Open Hunters’ Chase (2) 3¼m70y – 3.10sm AEDT

Betting Forecast

$6 Stand Up And Fight, $7 Hazel Hill, $8 Road To Rome, $8 Ucello Conti, $13 Caid du Berlais, $13 Shantou Flyer, $19 Haymount, $23 Pacha du Polder, $29 Coastal Tiep, $29 Top Wood, $34 Southfield Theatre, $41 Balnaslow, $67 Bar

Betting Strategy

The way Hazel Hill travelled and jumped before readily clearing away from a competitive field at Warwick really sticks in the mind and this 11-year-old, who is actually not fully exposed, looks to have all the attributes to make a name for himself at the top level. Stand Up And Fight should be well respected based on connections and Ucello Conti can play a big part if jumping efficiently.

 BACK (WIN) – Hazel Hill

Johnny Henderson Grand Annual Challenge Cup Handicap Chase (Grade 3) (1) – 3.50am AEDT

Betting Forecast

$6 Magic Saint, $9 Not Another Muddle, $9 Whatswrongwithyou, $13 Le Prezien, $17 Brelan d’As, $17 Mind’s Eye, $21 Caid du Lin, $23 Bun Doran, $26 Gino Trail, $26 Theflyingportrait, $29 Marracudja, $29 Mr Medic, $34 bar

Betting Strategy

Plenty of exposed sorts here and the progressive Not Another Muddle could be the answer. His excellent jumping was a key feature of an impressive win at Sandown 4 weeks ago and he should get the race run to suit. Magic Saint and Whatswrongwithyou are also going the right way and they head the dangers.

BACK (WIN) – Not Another Muddle

Martin Pipe Conditional Jockeys’ Handicap Hurdle (2) 2½m56y – 4.30am AEDT

Betting Forecast

$5.5 Dallas des Pictons, $10 Early Doors, $15 Cartwright, $17 Defi Bleu, $19 Acapella Bourgeois, $21 Pym, $23 Getareason, $26 Discordantly, $26 If You Say Run, $26 Not That Fuisse, $26 Style de Garde, $29 Daybreak Boy, $29 Doctor Dex, $29 Mount Mews, $29 Mr Antolini, $34 Big Time Dancer, $34 Burrows Park, $34 Le Musee, $41 Coolanly, $51 Casa Tall, $51 Champagne Court, $51 Garo de Juilley, $67 Bar

Betting Strategy

Cartwright is in better heart than his form figures would suggest, and this prolific Flat stayer is unexposed over this sort of trip over hurdles. Stablemate Dallas des Pictons has been the subject of a big gamble in recent days and he’s clearly very progressive, but Cartwright looks the value play. Of the rest, Early Doors and Not That Fuisse seem sure to go well.

Analyst’s Verdict

Al Dancer was most impressive when taking apart a good field at Ascot and can retain his unbeaten record over hurdles with another big win, the prospect of a well-run race sure to see him in the best light. Juvenile Fakir d’Oudairies looks a key player, as does the exciting, well-backed Angels Breath, the choice of Nico de Boinville over stablemate Mister Fisher.

Analyst’s Verdict

No novice chaser this season has looked more assured than Glen Forsa in the jumping department. Indeed, he produced a power-packed display when making Kalashnikov look decidedly ordinary at Sandown and will take plenty of stopping here. Duc des Genievres is next on the list ahead of fellow Irish-raider Hardline.

Analyst’s Verdict

Jonjo O’Neill has a good record in this race and it’s perhaps worth chancing Minella Rocco, who could well have needed both outings this season. Still only a 9-y-o he’s very well treated on his Gold Cup second in 2017 and, interestingly, he now has cheekpieces and a tongue tie combined for the first time since then. Up For Review, Mister Whitaker and Vintage Clouds head the many dangers.

Analyst’s Verdict

After easy wins on all 4 outings this term, including most impressively back at 2m in the Irish Champion latest, Apple’s Jade is taken to thwart Buveur d’Air as that one bids to become the first since Istabraq to complete a hat-trick in the race. Laurina, who burst on to the scene with her Dawn Run success last year, has yet to taste defeat for Willie Mullins and is another fascinating contender.

Analyst’s Verdict

Benie des Dieux took advantage of a below-par Apple’s Jade twice last spring (formerly in this race) and that form is well in advance of the opposition here. Her subsequent absence is no concern given the yard she represents and she can provide Willie Mullins with his tenth win in the race. Roksana shaped well on last month’s reappearance and is second choice in favour of Limini.

Betting Forecast

$9 Riders Onthe Storm, $10 A Plus Tard, $11 Tower Bridge, $15 Movewiththetimes, $17 Highway One O One, $19 Cubomania, $19 Quamino, $19 Roaring Bull, $19 Shady Operator, $19 Springtown Lake, $19 Walt, $21 Good Man Pat, $23 Ben Dundee, $23 Lough Derg Spirit, $26 Red Indian, $26 Solomn Grundy, $26 The Russian Doyen, $29 Huntsman Son, $41 Azzerti, $51 Dell Oro, $51 Larry, $51 Militarian

Analyst’s Verdict

Tower Bridge ran a cracker in last year’s Albert Bartlett and posted much his best effort in this discipline when second to Duc des Genievres at Gowran last time. He gets the vote in a typically-open renewal of this contest. Fellow Irish raiders A Plus Tard and Riders Onthe Storm are feared most, whilst Springtown Lake may be best of the home contingent.

Analyst’s Verdict

It looks significant that Ballyward is the sole Willie Mullins runner given the fine record of son Patrick and the yard in the race. He probably would have won at Naas even without Discorama’s fall and he should relish this test. OK Corral jumped like a seasoned pro when winning on just his second start over fences at Warwick and is a big player. Whisperinthebreeze completes the shortlist.

Pertemps Network Final Handicap Hurdle (Grade 3) (1) 2m7f213y – 1230 am AEDT

Betting Forecast

$3.75 Champ, $4.5 Battleoverdoyen, $9.5 Brewin’upastorm, $11 City Island, $15 Beakstown, $17 Sams Profile, $23 Galvin, $26 Bright Forecast, $29 Easy Game, $41 Castlebawn West, $41 Dunvegan, $41 Jarveys Plate, $51 Valdieu, $67 Ask Dillon, $67 Notebook, $67 Seddon

Betting Strategy

It wasn’t a particularly strong Grade 1 that Battleoverdoyen landed at Naas but there’s plenty to like about how much he’s done so soon in his development, and there’s good reason to believe that he has more to offer.

Gordon Elliott’s charge gets the nod ahead of another highly promising novice in Champ, while City Island and Brewin’upastorm are others to consider.

 BACK (WIN) – Battleoverdoyen

RSA Insurance Novices’ Chase (Grade 1) (1) 3m80y – 1.10 am AEDT

Betting Strategy

Topofthegame has shaped really well on both starts over fences, looking all over the winner until inexperience seemingly got the better of him at Kempton last time. Further improvement looks assured and he can land the spoils.

Delta Work has barely put a foot wrong since switched to the larger obstacles and is feared most, whilst Santini will appreciate the recent rain and is also respected.

Betting Strategy

Uradel is still unexposed over hurdles and caught the eye when a staying-on fifth over a shorter trip at Leopardstown last time. The choice of Ruby Walsh, he is taken to land a typically competitive renewal of this contest. Brio Conti is also low-mileage and is feared most after his Ascot victory last time, whilst Scarpeta, Erick Le Rouge and Highest Sun also hold appeal.

Betting Strategy

Impossible to see past the outstanding Altior who continues to carry all before him and can stretch his unbeaten record over jumps to 18. Last year’s runner-up Min is the one most likely to follow him home again. God’s Own, who has a decent record at this meeting, is as good as ever at the age of 11 and may prove best of the remainder.

 BACK (WIN) – Altior

Glenfarclas Chase (Cross Country) (2) 3¾m37y – 3.10 am AEDT

Betting Forecast

$2.25 Tiger Roll, $11 Auvergnat, $12 Josies Orders, $15 Ultragold, $15 Urgent de Gregaine, $21 Tea For Two, $29 Ballycasey, $29 Fact of The Matter, $34 Kingswell Theatre, $34 Vyta du Roc, $41 Amazing Comedy, $41 Bless The Wings, $41 Hurricane Darwin, $51 Aubusson, $51 Jarob, $151 Devils Bride

Betting Strategy

Tiger Roll looked as good if not better than ever when breezing through to win a Grade 2 over hurdles at Navan last month, a run that was almost certainly intended as a prep’ for this. It’s hard to oppose him as he bids for back-to-back victories in this before going to defend his crown in the Grand National. Last year’s runner-up, Urgent de Gregaine, is a danger, along with Josies Orders.

 BACK (WIN) – Tiger Roll

Boodles Juvenile Handicap Hurdle (Fred Winter) (Grade 3) (1) 2m87y – 3.50 am AEDT

Betting Forecast

$7.5 Band of Outlaws, $9 Lethal Steps, $11 Fine Brunello, $17 Chief Justice, $17 Ciel de Neige, $21 Our Power, $21 Star Max, $23 Fanfan du Seuil, $23 Got Trumped, $23 Prabeni, $26 Beat The Judge, $26 Dogon, $26 Praeceps, $29 Coko Beach, $29 La Sorelita, $29 Torpillo, $34 Cracker Factory, $34 King d’Argent, $34 Oi The Clubb Oi’s, $41 Naturelle, 51 bar

Betting Strategy

A case can be made for plenty of these but the one who appeals most is Band of Outlaws. He travelled notably well when landing a Naas novice in good style last time and is likely to go on improving. Lethal Steps could be the pick of the Gordon Elliott trio, while Willie Mullins’ Ciel de Neige is one to note in the betting and Fanfan du Seuil also needs considering.

BACK (WIN) – Band of Outlaws

Betting Strategy

Envoi Allen is not only the pick on form, but he’s got an experience edge on the bulk of his rivals, so this exciting prospect can take his unbeaten record to 5 (won a point easily). There is of course stiff opposition from the likes of Meticulous, who wasn’t far behind the selection at Leopardstown last time, and runaway debut-scorer Blue Sari.

 BACK (WIN) – Envoi Allen

JLT Novices’ Chase (Golden Miller) (Grade 1) (1) 2m3f168y

Betting Forecast

$3.75 Defi du Seuil, $4.33 Lostintranslation, $8.5 Real Steel, $9 Kildisart, $12 Vinndication, $15 Voix du Reve, $19 Pravalaguna, $23 Mengli Khan, $26 Capeland, $34 Castafiore

Betting Strategy

Lostintranslation displayed a willing attitude when mastering Defi Du Seuil here in January and while he subsequently succumbed to the latter at Sandown, the return to this track (seems best going left-handed) tilts the scales back in favour of Colin Tizzard’s charge.

His old rival is likely to mount a serious challenge and is feared most, while Real Steel may be the pick of Willie Mullins’ trio.

 BACK (WIN) – Lostintranslation

Pertemps Network Final Handicap Hurdle (Grade 3) (1) 2m7f213y

Betting Forecast

$8.5 Sire du Berlais, $13 First Assignment, $15 Walk To Freedom, $17 A Toi Phil, $17 Notwhatiam, $17 Samburu Shujaa, $17 Thermistocles, $19 Cuneo, $23 Aaron Lad, $23 Flemcara, $23 Not Many Left, $23 Theclockisticking, $26 Abolitionist, $26 Champers On Ice, $29 Black Mischief, $29 Boyhood, $29 Padleyourowncanoe, $34 bar

Betting Strategy

It’s hard not be drawn to Sire du Berlais, who caught the eye keeping on into sixth from an unpromising position in what looked a strong qualifier at Leopardstown over Christmas.

Walk To Freedom and Thermistocles are others who emerged from that race with plenty of credit, while First Assignment is another interesting runner, especially with his yard back amongst the winners in recent days.

BACK (WIN) – Sire du Berlais

Ryanair Chase (Festival Trophy) (Grade 1) (1) 2½m127y

Betting Forecast

$4.33 Footpad, $5.5 Monalee, $6.5 Un de Sceaux, $7 Road To Respect, $8 Frodon, $26 Balko des Flos, $29 Aso, $29 The Storyteller, $34 Charbel, $34 Coney Island, $34 Terrefort, $51 Sub Lieutenant

Betting Strategy

Last year’s outstanding novice Footpad has had a stuttering campaign but he did go through the vast majority of his Leopardstown race over Christmas like the horse of last season and he’s taken to bounce back to his best. His admirable stablemate Un de Sceaux is 11 now but he’s still capable of a very high level of form and is narrowly preferred to Frodon for the forecast spot.

Sun Racing Stayers’ Hurdle (Grade 1) (1) 2m7f213y

Betting Forecast

$2.88 Paisley Park, $6.5 Faugheen, $9 Supasundae, $15 Kilbricken Storm, $17 Bapaume, $17 Black Op, $21 Bacardys, $21 Top Notch, $34 West Approach, $34 Wholestone, $41 Petit Mouchoir, $51 Sam Spinner, $51 Yanworth, $67 Coquin Mans, $67 Keeper Hill, $101 The Mighty Don, $151 Nautical Nitwit, $251 Man of Plenty

Betting Strategy

Paisley Park has improved in leaps and bounds this season, and following his impressive performance in the Cleeve Hurdle, he’s very much the one to beat. Faugheen evidently still retains plenty of enthusiasm for the game and is feared most assuming he’s none the worse for his fall. Supasundae looks best of the rest.

Betting Strategy

Siruh du Lac has progressed with each run this season, once again jumping superbly when scoring by a head from Janika in Grade 3 Handicap over C&D in January. Open to further improvement, a 7 lb rise looks scalable and he can complete a fourth straight win. There’s more to come from Janika, while Spiritofthegames’ third to Kildisart isn’t form to be scoffed at, either.

Betting Strategy

Willie Mullins saddles 7 as he bids to continue his domination of this race but the form of the home contingent looks slightly stronger this year and they may hold sway.

The front-running Posh Trish looks just about best of them after 2 listed wins but Lust For Glory and Indefatigable aren’t too far behind her, while Nicky Henderson’s Epatante clearly has a very big reputation.

Betting Strategy

J.P. McManus owned horses have traditionally done well in this race, and No Comment, who still retains a Timeform large ‘P’, could be the answer. The National Hunt Challenge Cup proved to be the wrong race for him at last season’s Festival but this test should prove to be much more suitable.
