R8 JR & N Berkett Telegraph G1 1200m

Tempo: Strong

Major Players

1. Start Wondering: Has returned to New Zealand registering two wins from three starts. His latest win was in the Group 1 Railway Stakes over 1200m after sitting without cover just off a solid tempo and holding his rivals at bay convincingly. Drawn Barrier 14 and could get trapped but it didn’t worry him last time.

3. Perfect Fit: Followed Start Wondering every which way in the Railway yet couldn’t make any ground on him over the final 100m. He’s drawn gate 1 this time and gets up to his preferred distance and will be hard to beat. Will be interesting to take note on how the fence is playing at that stage of the day.

4. Odyssey Moon: The Australian trained Odyssey Moon arrives in NZ after winning the Standish over 1200m at Flemington. Her past two Aussie wins have been up the Flemington straight and prior to that her last win was narrowly in an Open handicap at Sandown. It’s a big ask for her.

13. First Serve: A lightly raced mare with seven wins from nine starts. She’s already a Group 3 winner and last start won a BM85 in impressive fashion carrying 62.5kg. She hits this race in peak form and just could announce herself as the latest star in New Zealand.

Betting Strategy

BACK (WIN) Start Wondering for 3 units at $4 or better

BACK (WIN) First Serve for 3 units at $6 or better

R10 Wellington Cup G3 3200m

Tempo: Average

Major Players

3. Bloodstream: Lightly raced gelding (17s:5w) building an impressive resume. A dominant winner over 2500m in a BM85 before being freshened and targeted for this race. Can’t be discounted but looks a big challenge and well found as second pick in the early moments.

7. Fanatic: Disappointing in the Auckland Cup, however was reported to have suffered from Cardiac Arrhythmia so could be worth forgiving for that run. Not for me at the current price.

13. Balham: He’s got a strong platform heading into the 3200m event. Has won multiple times at a mile and half and was given a nice soft run last start in the Listed Gallagher Marton. Looks ideally placed and could get under the punters guards.

18. Clarify: Has hit peak form at the right time and has taken out a BM65 and Series Final over 2100m and 2200m at his past two starts. This is a mighty step up in trip and looks ‘over bet’ in early markets.

Betting Strategy

BACK (WIN) Balham for 2 units at $10 or better
