Race 1 Speed Star 595,  Matches 1-4, 595 metres

Match Up 1

He doesn’t seem to be racing at his best at the moment. He is a gun chaser on his night but he faces a freakish opponent here.

He trialled here last Sunday in order to qualify for this event. He set the track alight in an excellent 34.08. The trial was in terrible conditions with wind, rain and a heavy track so it was an incredible effort. Whilst he may not lead early I expect him to storm home over the top and win and is one of my best bets on the program.

 BACK – Spring Bridge (6 units) at > $1.30

Match Up 2

He was victorious in a Speed Star match up earlier this year over this distance and he is still racing in great form. He is at peak fitness and the inside draw suits and he should be winning this.

He can be a bit of an enigma. His best is scintillating and his bad is really awful.  He is suited to the format but he can be too unpredictable for mine so I am happy to go against him.

 BACK – Apex Within (4 units) at > $1.35

Match Up 3

He had a rich vein of form in July and he looks like he can be one of the star middle distance chasers over the coming months. However, after over a month off he hasn’t quite been at his best and hasn’t had much luck in running. Although he is the class dog of this matchup he still may not be at peak fitness and I am happy to stay out.

He is a star middle distance performer in Queensland and his 34.18 trial here in preparation for this series was super given it was his first look at the track. Even though he could improve with a second look at the circuit it isn’t enough for me to invest here.

Match Up 4

He is really suited to the format as he can take a while to wind up in races, and in full fields and bend starts this can often see him finding some early trouble. I can see him exploding mid race here and causing an upset.

NEO CLEO (Box 3)

She uncharacteristically missed the start in her most recent race last month and was found to be injured. She hasn’t raced since so there is a slight question mark on if she is near her best.

She is having her 78th start and she is closer to the end than the beginning. She has come up very short in early markets and I am happy to have a small play against her.

 LAY – Neo Cleo (2 units) at < $1.25

Race 2 Consolation #1, Matches 1-4, 515 metres

Match Up 1

She can be a little hard to catch at times and although her best is very good she would need to produce a career best run to win this. I just can’t see that happening here and if she leads clearly early I expect her to get reeled in.

She has been airborne in recent runs at Geelong and here earlier this month. Although she has been benefited by inside draws, both wins were still incredible efforts.

I would prefer her to have the inside draw in this match up but she does have previous form over 600 and 700 metres. Strength is a huge asset for her and she should still be winning this.

BACK – Sweet as Emm (4 units) at > $1.28

Match Up 2

I have really liked his two trials here in preparation for this series. He didn’t have the best conditions in either trial run so he is capable of going quicker. He is also a fence crasher so the inside draw here is very suitable. This is one of the more intriguing match ups of the night.

He won a heat of the Cranbourne Classic in a scorching 30.03, this dog is really capable of producing a powerful performance when he gets some room early. He looks suited by the outside draw and with Campini likely heading left when the lids rise I can see him really accelerating through the first turn, pinching a break and holding on in a minor upset.

 BACK – Waging War (2 units) at > $2.00

Match Up 3

He has been making a stack of mistakes in recent runs where he looked like he had his chance to go on with it and didn’t.  He has been very costly and this match up looks far too tough for him.

He broke the track record at Murray Bridge over 530 metres last Sunday night which was a great pipe opener for this event. He looked suited by the wide draw in that run and has come up trumps with the outside draw here.

He can be a little risky at box rise but this is probably one of the few matchups where he can afford to miss the start but still prove too good. He is incredibly strong.

 BACK – Razor’s Edge (6 units) at > $1.20

Match Up 4

She won 5 starts in a row at this track and trip over July and August. She hasn’t raced this month so maybe there are some fitness queries going into this.

On the flip side she is well suited by the inside draw and looks to have future staying potential so she will keep coming. I wouldn’t talk you out of a value play here but I just prefer other match ups.

He was the winner of the Cranbourne Classic recently and then didn’t have much luck in his last start at Bulli in a heat of the Million Dollar Chase. He looks suited to the outside draw here and his best is more than likely winning this but I am preferring to invest in other match ups through the night.

Race 3 Speed Star 515- Matches 1-4, 515 metres

Match Up 1

He is as professional as they come and the inside draw in this match up looks perfect for him. He should have enough early speed to hold the rail going into the first turn and prove far too classy.

He produced a career best run of 29.28 that seemed to come from nowhere at the time. He needs to replicate these runs more consistently and against one of the best chasers in the country I just can’t see him winning here.

 BACK – Sennachie (5 units) at > $1.20

Match Up 2

He has a stack of ability but has been a little erratic in recent runs and I can’t fully trust him. He meets the Number 1 seed in this match up and I give him little chance of winning.

He ran an incredible 29.09 here at only his 5th race start and in wet conditions on the day. It was a phenomenal run. He just seems to get better each start but he will be extremely short odds here and I don’t want anything to go wrong. He is the youngest chaser in this event by 8 months and I am happy to stay out of this one.

Match Up 3

She is very reliable early and you know where you stand with her. She will ping the lids and give a great sight but I can see her getting run down late here.

He has freakish ability when he gets some early favours in races. He tends to find plenty of trouble in his races so this format is perfect for him. I doubt he can lead early but has the strength to reel in Courting and hopefully by the home turn he would have already hit the lead.

BACK – Got Some Wheels (3 units) at > $1.26

Match Up 4

He returned to form in fine style over the 595 metres here recently. This may be a timely confidence booster and he will need it against one of Australia’s best and most popular greyhounds.

“The Feral” has set the track alight in the recent heat and regional final of the Million Dollar Chase at Gunnedah where he obliterated the track record by nearly 10 lengths.

He will literally run through a brick wall in his races and although I would have preferred him from the inside draw he should prove too slick here.

Sennachie (1 unit) at > $4.00

Race 4 Consolation #2, Matches 1-4, 515 metres

Match Up 1

He is a serious up and comer. He has been improving with every run and getting stronger. The inside draw looks to suit but his opponent has some solid 600-metre form and he could be left vulnerable late.

He is another in the category of needing plenty of galloping room early in his races. He often seems to find trouble in a full field so I think he can produce a surprisingly good run here and cause the upset.

 BACK – Steinbrenner (2 units) at > $2.15

Match Up 2

When he produced an all the way win here in early July in 29.60 he looked like he would be on a quick upward curve. But he has only won one start out of 7 since and that was a race at Warragul.

He seems to be finding trouble too frequently. However, the inside draw looks great for him here but there are too many variables in this match up to bet.

She hit the line well at The Meadows last Wednesday but it didn’t exactly enthuse me to step in and have a bet here. She has only won once in 5 starts here and can produce inconsistent efforts. I am looking to other match ups.

Match Up 3

In what looks a tough match up to predict on paper, he produced a super all the way win here last month in leading all the way in 29.59 in a race that had a stack of early speed.

So he is capable of such runs but has only won once in 6 starts since. I never quite know what I am getting with him so I am happy to not invest here.

She has run second in her last four starts. Unbelievably these 4 seconds have amounted to only 1.5 lengths so she has been so close yet so far. She is still racing very well and is rock hard fit and although I do have a slight leaning towards her I am not confident enough to have a wager.

Match Up 4

He is still racing with great heart and had a purple patch of form over this track and trip in July where he won 4 Free For All starts in a row. The inside draw suits him but he has come up extremely short in early markets but I am not willing to lay him given his opponent hasn’t been in the greatest form.

HE’S FOR ME (Box 3)

He took a tumble last week at The Meadows so he has been finding some trouble lately. His last win was over this track and trip and he is very strong. Given he will be very long odds here, he is worth a small play.

Race 5 Speed Star Stayers, Matches 1-4- 715m

Match Up 1

With the inside draw and a wide runner drawn to his outside he looks a moral here. He is a champion chaser who could give the track record a shake here if conditions permit. Given he will likely start somewhere in the range of $1.03 there isn’t much point in investing heavily here.

HAN SOLO (Box 3)

He faces a near impossible task here. Even if he produced a career best run it still wouldn’t be good enough against Tornado Tears.

Match Up 2

This looks a tough match up to predict. He recently won here in a personal best time of 42.05, which is only 2 lengths slower than She Will Bloom’s runner’s up performance here last start. So this match up could be closer than the odds suggest and he is a stayer with plenty of upside.

She will be out in front and it will just be a matter of her being able to hold on and win. Angry Trip will be strong late and She Will Bloom will be at her most vulnerable. She would need to pinch a sizeable break mid-race and given there are a few variables here in this match up, I am happy to take her on.

LAY – She Will Bloom (2 units) at < $1.30

Match Up 3

This chaser can run all day, he can take a while to warm up but he just keeps coming and coming. He should be winning this but I am not confident enough to bet.

He has been getting a long way back in recent runs and although this format does suit him,  he just hasn’t been racing with enough confidence lately. He also scouts wide in his race which can be to his detriment.

Match Up 4

She rails well in her races and is still racing with great heart. She should get every chance of a clear run here but it is just a question of whether her best is good enough here which is doubtful.

The outside draw suits him to a tee as he likes to use plenty of the track off the mat. He does look the winner but at odds in the vicinity of $1.15 to $1.20 I am happy to let this one go.
