Shortlist: Royal Ascot 2017 Day 1, Tuesday 20th June 2017

Queen Anne Stakes (Group 1) (1) 1m 11:30pm

Timeform Rating of previous winners: 161 140 140 140 140 (Avg 144)

Top Rated & Flags

Betting Forecast

$2 Ribchester, $7.5 Lightning Spear, $10 Mutakayyef, $21 Deauville, $23 American Patriot, $26 Ennaadd, $29 Dutch Connection, $34 Miss Temple City, $41 bar

Analyst’s Verdict

The progression of Ribchester shows little signs of slowing down and he was better than ever when winning the Lockinge last time. Consistent and likeable, he can confirm himself as the leading miler in Europe with a second Royal Ascot success. Lightning Spear should have come on for his return behind that rival at Newbury and can follow him home again, while Mutakayyef has solid place claims.

Coventry Stakes (Group 2) (1) 6f 12:05am

Timeform Rating of previous winners: 132 133 124 128 141 (Avg 132)

Top Rated & Flags

Betting Forecast

$6 Brother Bear, $8.5 De Bruyne Horse, $9 Denaar, $10 Arawak, $11 Murillo, $15 Nebo, Rajasinghe, $17 Romanised, $23 Aqabah, $26 Zaman, $29 Red Roman, Prince of The Dark, $34 Haddaf, Headway, $41 bar

Analyst’s Verdict

De Bruyne Horse produced one of the best performances by a juvenile this year when winning the Woodcote at Epsom last time and makes the most appeal. His stablemate Denaar is another to consider, with Irish-pair Brother Bear and Murillo making up the shortlist.

King’s Stand Stakes (Group 1) (1) 5f 12:40am

Timeform Rating of previous winners: 136 136 138 129 128 (Avg 133)

Top Rated & Flags

Betting Forecast

$4 Lady Aurelia, $5 Marsha, $7.5 Signs of Blessing, $17 Priceless, $19 Washington DC, Muthmir, $21 Profitable, Goldream, $34 Alpha Delphini, Cotai Glory, Ardhoomey, $41 bar

Analyst’s Verdict

Lady Aurelia’s brazen show of speed in the Queen Mary was one of the highlights of last year’s meeting, and with her reappearance suggesting she’s back in excellent heart, she has to be the call in receipt of weight all round. Clear second choice is fellow-filly Marsha, who has tasted success at the very top level, with Signs of Blessing best of the rest.

St James’s Palace Stakes (Group 1) (1) 7f213y 1:20am

Timeform Rating of previous winners: 133 140 146 141 139 (Avg 140)

Top Rated & Flags

Betting Forecast

$1.72 Churchill, $3.75 Barney Roy, $11 Thunder Snow, $29 Lancaster Bomber, $34 Rivet, $41 bar

Analyst’s Verdict

The Guineas 1-2 Churchill and Barney Roy are several pounds clear on Timeform ratings, and this could develop into a duel. From a value point of view, Barney Roy looks the better bet, given he has only a length to find on his rival and has been kept fresh since. He will also have learnt plenty from his Newmarket experience, only the third run of his career.

Ascot Stakes (Handicap) (2) 2m3f210y 2:00am

Top Rated & Flags

Betting Forecast

$5 Thomas Hobson, $8.5 Who Dares Wins, $11 Beyond Conceit, $15 Magic Circle, $17 High Secret, $19 Oceane, Yorkidding, $21 Endless Acres, Rainbow Dreamer, $23 Suegioo, $26 Cartwright, $29 Star Rider, Cleonte, Iniciar, $34 Shrewd, Moorside, $41 bar

Analyst’s Verdict

You have to go back to 2013 for when Thomas Hobson and Beyond Conceit were last seen out in this sphere, but they’ve showcased their talent over hurdles in recent months and could be the pair to focus on. Preference is for Thomas Hobson, who looks tailor-made for this marathon. Who Dares Wins and Magic Circle, both major eye-catchers in the Chester Cup, and Endless Acres are others to consider.

Windsor Castle Stakes (Listed) (1) 5f7f3y 2:35am

Timeform Rating of previous winners: 114 115 122 117 116 (Avg 117)

Top Rated & Flags

Betting Forecast

$6 Declarationofpeace, $7 Nootka Sound, $7.5 Elizabeth Darcy, $12 Roussel, $17 Corinthia Knight, Another Batt, $21 Simmy’s Copshop, $23 Sound And Silence, Dragons Tail, $26 Marchingontogether, $29 T For Tango, Mokaatil, $34 Dahik, $41 bar

Analyst’s Verdict

Declarationofpeace has a hefty price tag to live up to, but he looked every inch a top prospect when emphatically landing the odds at Dundalk last month. He’s bred for further, but clearly isn’t short on pace and he’s preferred to the promising once-raced Wesley Ward-trained duo Elizabeth Darcy and Nootka Sound.
