$4 Lancelot du Lac, $6.5 Perfect Pasture, $7 Danzeno, $8.5 Mr Lupton, $9 Teruntum Star, $13 Ice Age, $15 Blue de Vega, $17 Mjjack, $34 Von Blucher, $51 Visionary, $101 Roland Rocks

Analyst’s Verdict

Lancelot du Lac holds a fitness edge over principle rivals Perfect Pasture and Mr Lupton, a factor which could prove decisive. Indeed, the 8-y-o looked at least as good as ever when enhancing his fine AW strike rate a fortnight ago and, as he proved when landing a big pot at Glorious Goodwood last summer, he’s no slouch on turf either. Ice Age was progressive last season and is best of the rest.

$5.5 Taqdeer, $7 Original Choice, $8.5 What’s The Story, $13 Kynren, $15 Humbert, $23 King’s Pavilion, $23 Sir Roderic, $26 Brilliant Vanguard, $26 Executive Force, $29 Apex King, $29 Dark Devil, $29 Titus, $34 Cymraeg Bounty, $34 Lord of The Rock, $41 Georgian Bay, $41 Moonlightnavigator, $41 Oud Metha Bridge, $41 Pastime, $41 Seduce Me, $51 High Acclaim, $51 Sands Chorus

Analyst’s Verdict

The vote goes to What’s The Story, who did the job well when making a winning handicap debut under similar conditions here in November. He shaped well off this mark on return at Newcastle and the booking Ryan Moore suggests that connections mean business. Original Choice is a big danger and the unexposed Taqdeer is also feared, despite an absence of almost 2 years. Kynren completes the shortlist.

$3 Tabarrak, $3.25 Zabeel Prince, $8 Intern, $8.5 Crazy Horse, $11 Born To Be Alive, $17 Another Touch

Analyst’s Verdict

Lightly-raced 5-y-os Zabeel Prince and Tabarrak are expected to come to the fore. The latter signed off last term by landing a competitive Newbury event and isn’t passed over lightly, despite carrying a penalty. However, preference is for Zabeel Prince, who looked most progressive in 2017 and it’s easy to forgive his below-par display at Ascot when last seen in October. Intern is best of the rest.

Betting Forecast

$7.5 Fire Brigade, $8 Addeybb, $9 Lord Glitters, $12 Big Country, $15 Ballard Down, $17 Leader Writer, $17 Mitchum Swagger, $19 Chelsea Lad, $23 Donncha, $23 Repercussion, $26 Bravery, $29 Dark Red, $34 Gabrial, $34 Grey Britain, $34 Kings Gift, $41 Dolphin Vista, $41 Stamp Hill, $41 Via Via, $41 Withernsea, $51 London Protocol, $67 Hayadh, 67 Not So Sleepy

Analyst’s Verdict

The value angle could be Mitchum Swagger, who was third in the 2016 Royal Hunt Cup off a 3 lb higher mark. Though largely below par last year, it could be that the 6-y-o will have benefited from a change of scenery (debut for new yard) and conditions are in his favour. Lord Glitters and Addeybb, both of whom may have more to offer this season, are big dangers and Fire Brigade is also feared.

Analyst’s Verdict

The two yards that won the divisions of this last year can come to the fore again, with Langholm, a €100,000 purchase, chanced for Declan Carroll without the benefit of market clues. Richard Fahey can always be relied upon to have a sharp 2-y-o and Wasntexpectingthat could fall into that category. Izzer looks another to keep an eye on.

$3.5 Proschema, $4.33 Voyager Blue, $5.5 Argentello, $9 Blazing Saddles, $13 In Demand, $23 Ad Libitum, $23 Chiave di Volta, $41 Dawn Commando, $51 Magojiro, $67 Princess Noora, $101 Kenny George

Analyst’s Verdict

This looks ripe for Proschema, who chased home subsequent Group 3 winner Ghaiyyath on debut at Newmarket in September. He was subsequently third at Newbury where he shaped as though stepping up to this trip would be very much in his favour. Voyager Blue is a similarly promising type and is feared most, while newcomers Argentello, Blazing Saddles and In Demand should all be noted in the betting.

Betting Forecast

$8.5 Framley Garth, $8.5 Swansway, $9 Seventii, $10 Topamichi, $11 Incredible Dream, $13 Bit of A Quirke, $13 Essenaitch, $15 Prerogative, $15 Zoravan, $17 Bob Maxwell, $19 Hanseatic, $21 Bombero, $41 Polar Forest

Analyst’s Verdict

Topamichi was successful on his latest turf start at Nottingham in November and, with similar conditions forecast here, he could be the answer to what looks a wide-open handicap. Swansway would probably prefer faster ground, therefore the selection may have most to fear from Framley Garth and Prerogative, who has proved somewhat frustrating overall but merits respect off a reduced mark.

Betting Forecast

$5 Abel Tasman, $8.5 Stormingin, $9.5 Tagur, $10 Decima, $13 Boycie, $15 Akkadian Empire, $15 Golconda Prince, $15 Windsorlot, $17 Highway One, $19 Outlaw Torn, $21 Riviere Argentee, $23 Iconic Belle, $26 Rita’s Man

Analyst’s Verdict

Low-mileage 4-y-o Abel Tasman was threatening to come good in handicaps during the autumn, suggesting his mark was a workable one, and he earns the vote in the hope conditions don’t pose a problem on his return. Stormingin and Decima also appeal as the types to make their mark this term and rate next best.
