Track: Randwick | Distance: 1600m | Condition: 3YO SW | Rail Position: +6m | Track Condition: Heavy 10 | Prizemoney: $1,000,000

Heavy rain forecast for Friday & Saturday. Expecting the track to remain a Heavy 10.

  • 2nd up (6), 3rd up (2), 4th up (2)
  • 14-day break (10)
  • Leader (2), Settled 6th-13th (8)
  • Colts (6), Geldings (3), Fillies (1)

Generally best to settle midfield to back. Every winner has come from 14 days break off a good run in the traditional 1400m Rosehill Hobartville Stakes leadup. Fillies generally run well from limited attempts. Winners usually have proven they are up to G1 grade in the Spring.

Interestingly, on wet tracks, the winner of this race had a VRC Derby/Oaks run in the Spring.

Below average speed here. Military Expert maps to get an easy lead. Converge has been racing best ridden back, but maps to sit 2nd here if it wants to. War Eternal, Coastwatch, Raging Bull, Anamoe & Sword Point jostle for midfield positions. Sea Treasures, Hilal, Royalzel & Sinba settle out the back.

1. Anamoe

G1 Sires Produce and G1 Caulfield Guineas winner, who was beatena nose in the G1 Cox Plate. Won the Hobartville Stakes key leadup last start. Deserved favourite but $1.70 in early markets is very skinny for any horse unproven on a Heavy 10

2. Converge

Is by Frankel and trained by Gai so should excel as he gets out in trip. Won the JJ Atkins G1 comprehensively by 3.3L and his dominant Randwick 964m Aug 20 trial win by 2.8L was outstanding. Then caught a virus and was spelled. Came back this prep, settled back and rattled home to win a Randwick 1000m Jan 24 trial by 3L+2.9, running the 7th quickest last 600m and 2nd quickest last 200m of the day. Was a slashing 3rd at Randwick first up over 1200m against 2 G1 spinters Paulele & Ranch Hand, only beaten 1L when in the wrong part of the track. Then hit the line well for 3rd in the Hobartville. Unknown very wet but if handles it will relish a tough 1600m slog more than others.

3. Hilal

2nd beaten a nose in the G2 Champagne Stakes as a 2yo. Won the G2 Stan Fox and $1m Bondi Stakes last prep. Ran 2nd beaten a head by Anamoe in the Hobartville. Can win

4. Coastwatch

Won the G3 Ming Dynasty last prep on a wet track, then ran 3rd only beaten 1.5L in the Golden Rose. Won the G2 Autumn Stakes first up. Loves the sting out of the ground so the Heavy 10 conditions could be ideal here. Can certainly win.

7. Military Expert

Ran 2nd to Coaswtatch and 3rd to Lightsaber at G3 level. Won a BM72 by 2.4L last start. Looks to get a very sot lead here which means he could be in a long way. Place hope.

8. Raging Bull

Ran 6th in the G1 Spring Champion and 4th in the G1 Vic Derby last prep. That Vic Derby run profiles very well for a tough 1600m Heavy 10 slog here. Sat 3 wide no cover first up in the Hobartville and only beaten 5L. Roughie.

9. Royalzel

Last 4 starts have been awful, but is a genuine wet tracker so the Heavy 10 brings him into calculations. Roughie for a place

Looks a very competitive race given the Heavy 10 conditions.

Despite Anamoe being the one to beat, have to bet around him at the price.
