Race 7 – Catterick 2:40am
6. Desert Cross: Was sent off at just 6/1 for a valuable handicap at Yarmouth last time but essentially didn’t have a race, not getting any room from three furlongs out and finishing on the bridle. He is worth treating as if still in top form, and is taken to resume winning ways here. There still may be more to come from three-year-old Fire Leopard, while Crushed isn’t out of things either if bouncing back to form.

Race 3 – Newcastle 4:25am
6. Vera Drake: Has already shown enough in three starts to think that she is capable of winning a fillies’ novice such as this, and based on the way she has been shaping up the step up to a mile should be a big advantage here, so she gets the nod. Consolida may well be one for the longer term but she showed ability on debut at Newmarket and could improve here.

Race 7 – Newcastle 6:30am
3. Tiercel: We haven’t seen Tiercel for nearly a year, but he was progressing well when we last saw him, winning well on his handicap debut (at Windsor) with a bit to spare and, a maiden winner on the all-weather prior to that, he is the most likely winner here from just 2 lb higher in the weights than last time. If the selection misfires then Waarif, on debut for David O’Meara, and Harlow, returned to all-weather, are others to consider.
