THE TRIAL FILES
Pakenham (Racing.com Park) – Wednesday 23rd September
Rail +4m, Soft 6
Pakenham is a new surface with an emerging trend favouring runners off speed who build momentum before, and around the home turn.
Last Wednesday produced some was interesting. Early in the day horses such as ROLL THE IGNITION and GODSPEIL were able to lead and win but as the day progressed the jockeys naturally moved to the centre of the track – for no apparent reason.
BADAWIYA jumped slightly awkwardly last time out, from the wide draw she will work over and take up the running.
PRINCE TARKEIDA can come across from gate seven and provide nuisance value to BADAWIYA and SURF SEEKER will be right there ensuring a strong tempo.
VICEROY is drawn nicely in gate two and will kick up behind the leader while PATCH ADAMS will benefit from a very soft run in transit.
A few of these runners head to 1400m for the first time which makes the race very interesting.
PATCH ADAMS has been allotted 61kg, a scary number on paper, but when you consider the compressed weight scale of this event it is only 4kg above the minimum.
Steven Arnold snagged this 3YO colt to the tail at Flemington most recently before he closed strongly to get within 1.75L of BON AURUM – the run was super. He will settle much closer to the speed today and with a soft run in transit he will be in the finish.
TIVACI settled just off speed on debut at Echuca and was very green around the home bend. Once balanced up he showed an electric turn off foot – putting the race to bed in a matter of strides.
The rise to 1400m is ideal and although he will get back in the early stages he has the acceleration and apparent class the more experienced city gallopers.
BADAWIYA at her first two outings in Maiden company ran into a couple of handy gallopers in HAYBAH and SUPER CASH. A maiden win was inevitable and she did that in style with a 7L romp at Murtoa – in fast time for the day.
Her last start performance in the Atlantic Jewel Stakes over 1200m was eventful, she jumped awkwardly before having little luck in the straight.
The wide draw in today’s race forces her connections no option but to push forward and while she does have the tactical speed to take control of the race early she won’t get it all her own way. The last 150m will be a real test for this filly.
VICEROY was an easy favourite $1.80 to $2.00 at Balaklava on Cup Day, despite the drift he dominated the race winning by 3.7 lengths in good time for the day.
He quickly rises from 1050m to1400m but the way he came off the bit and was a touch one paced at the top of the straight suggesting 1400m will suit.
He debuted back in May at Ballarat and was interfered with severely 200m from home when charging at the leader – without the interference he may well be unbeaten.
BACK – WIN – VICEROY – We’ve rated him closer to $4 than the $8.50 offered in early markets. We suggest 1.5 units the WIN.
BACK – WIN – TIVACI – Currently $5.5 rated closer to $4. We suggest 1 unit the WIN.
