THE TRIAL FILES

Ballarat – Wednesday 30th September

Rail +9m, Good 3

The race we like today is over the 1000M which sees horses start at the sprint chute and enjoy a decent run into the home bend. With the rail out 9m we expect the track to play fairly.

RACE 2 – 3YO+ Maiden Set Weights

Speed Map:

HA LONG BAY is speedy and can kick up from barrier one. RANGRY from a wide draw and METRONOMY will go forward and it would not surprise to see REWARD FOR GLORY prominent early – the stable are very good at training speed into their sprinters.

It will be interesting to see how they choose to ride GOLDEN COPPER. She’s shown more tactical speed this time in and her best chance of winning here is to push forward from gate two. There is speed kicking up both inside and outside of this Mick Price trained filly and she could end up snookered on the rail.

GAY SKIER and AURENA are both going to settle in the second half of the field.

Key Trials:

AURENA (Cranbourne 11/9) went back to the tail from a wide draw. She settled nicely in the run before getting a split at the top of the straight. Patrick Maloney gave this mare a couple of digs at the 250m mark and she quickened nicely, sweeping past several rivals in the run to the post. The trial was good enough to see this filly make her way into our blackbook.

GAY SKIER (Cranbourne 23/9) was sent back to the trials after a debut 2nd at Ballarat. She settled off the speed, to run on nicely out wide in the straight. She tracked to the line well but we expected solid trial given her level of fitness.

METRONOMY trialled prior to her first up run and was another who went extremely well prompting our comment: “METRONOMY (Cranbourne 21/8) showed good gate speed to lead with ease. Allowed to bowl along out in front under her own steam. The handbrake was applied up the straight and she went to the line strongly.

GOLDEN CROPPER (Cranbourne 23/9) looked to trial in reasonable fashion (for a Mick Price runner) but once you look past the visual appeal of the trial there is some doubt over the strength of the performance. http://racingaustralia.horse/ weren’t able to record a time for the heat, but hand timed it came in 49.92 seconds which even allowing for some variance was very slow for the morning.

She trialled a week prior at Caulfield and was given a very solid hit out when able to lead all the way. In spite of winning that trial by several lengths the margin was flattering when considering the time and the fact she given a very solid test in the straight.

The Key Chances:

GAY SKIER was impressive on debut. She settled in behind the speed at this track and distance, held up at the top of the straight before racing erratically when clear late. The time for the 1000M wasn’t bad for maiden grade and the form has since been franked with MAGNETTE coming out and bolting in at her subsequent start.

The wide draw and strong tempo are both huge plusses for this mare and with the race experience under her belt she will be very hard to beat.

AURENA is a very poorly performed West Australian mare previously trained by Sonya Price and now with John Price – one can only assume a family connection. This 5YO mare has placed once form thirteen attempts in the west but at times she has shown glimpses of form.

The recent Cranbourne trial suggests John might have found the tonic for this mare and at big odds she can run a massive race first up.

METRONOMY was a shot duck turning for home when resuming in the same race as GAY SKIER and she was quickly eased up by Michael Dee. This mare has clearly caused a few issues in her short career and the three trainers for two starts is evidence to that. She possesses good tactical speed and there is talent buried somewhere in there – the dry track might be a plus today and we’d rather be on her, rather than oppose her at the price.

The Lay:

Happy to oppose GOLDEN COPPER first up off the back of recent trials – she would be better suited drawn out a touch and if they are to drive forward and lead she will spend a good deal of energy doing so. She’s a filly that looks suited over longer trips than the 1000m she faces today.

Betting Activity:

BACK – WIN – GAY SKIER – rated $2.75 and with $3.50 available we suggest 2 units to WIN.

BACK – WIN – AURENA – rated $8 and with $15-$19 available we suggest 0.75 units to WIN.

BACK – WIN – METRONOMY – has obvious talent, saving on her with 0.5 units WIN.
