EXPERT TIPS: FIBA BASKETBALL WORLD CUP

AUSTRALIA VS SLOVENIA

The Boomers successfully made their way through the first group stage with a resounding win over Japan. The earlier loss to Germany however has dented their chances of progressing to the quarter finals, unless the Aussies are able surpass Slovenia and stave off Georgia to finish Top 2 in their group.
Slovenia may not have the depth of some of the other nations, however they do have arguably the best player to feature in the tournament in Luka Doncic. Doncic has captivated many fans around the world with his exploits for the Dallas Mavericks in the NBA, however he needs to shoulder significant responsibility for his national team. Not an easy task.
I’ve spoken in other Boomers previews this tournament about Australia’s strength being their depth of talent across the roster. Although they certainly miss Jock Landale, the team has adjusted incredibly well. Josh Giddey has continued his impressive play, Patty Mills has found his range, and even Xavier Cooks has stepped up with a dominant display in the must-win clash with Japan.
These two teams met in the bronze medal match at the Olympics last year, with the Boomers coming away with the victory. The Boomers have the defensive tools on this roster to try and contain Doncic, and they can push the pace themselves to target Slovenia’s defensive set-up, as they did in Tokyo. The -5.5 points appeals in this one.

FIBA BASKETBALL WORLD CUP 2023 – OUTRIGHT DISCUSSION

The FIBA World Cup tips off in the Philippines, Indonesia and Japan on Friday, August 25, with 32 countries competing for the title. It shapes up to be a fascinating couple of weeks of basketball, with a number of big names participating in the tournament. For the NBA lovers, there are 55 players on current rosters across 21 of the countries taking part in the tournament, with the USA team leading the way with their full 12-man roster filled with NBA talent.

As is commonly the case with international basketball tournaments, USA is the clear favourite coming into the World Cup. Although the team doesn’t command the likes of LeBron James, Steph Curry and Kevin Durant, they have certainly made an effort to provide a balanced squad of players, with many capable of having an impact here even without the ball in their hands.

Leading the charge of the rest of the countries is the FIBA number one ranked country in Spain, however their team has certainly undergone a changing of the guard in recent years, but still command respect on the world stage. France, behind the likes of Rudy Gobert, Nicolas Batum and Evan Fournier will be strong competitors, as will fellow Group H members Canada, behind breakout OKC Thunder guard Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, RJ Barrett, Dillon Brooks, Luguentz Dort, Dwight Powell, Nickeil Alexander-Walker, and Kelly Olynyk.

For the Australian Boomers, it is certainly a competitive roster, with 9 NBA players representing them at the World Cup. The Boomers were hit by injury in the lead-up, with starting centre Jock Landale ruled out having injured his ankle on the eve of the tournament. With the likes of Josh Giddey, Patty Mills and Joe Ingles leading the squad, the Boomers will be a tough challenge for any team, even if they are a little short on big men.

32 teams are reduced to the Top 16 teams for the second stage, with the remaining countries playing in 17-32nd classification matches. From there, the 16 teams are culled to 8 quarterfinalists, leads the charge in terms of the odds coming into the

The two-tiered pool stages will help the USA have more time to gel in preparation for the last 8, and looking to the rest of the countries, Canada looks best placed to challenge, followed by Australia.
