Randwick, Saturday January 16 2016
Expected track condition: Slow – Heavy
Race 2: 1100 OPEN 2YO Set Weights + Penalties
The 2YO’s go for a spin in the second race on the card at Randwick with autumn glory the ultimate goal. Having said that, it doesn’t look like an overly strong affair on paper.
The wet weather has set in which will make Saturday’s track a true test for these 2YO’s. Leading on the fence will be a big ask, with the winner most likely to come down the center of the track.
Scarlet Rain: Saturday will be a much tougher task for debut winner Scarlet Rain. She got the job done at Rosehill last time but she had the rails to guide her and a fast lane pushing her all the way. I’d imagine she will ease on the day and I can see good reason to take her on.
Ones to Watch From the Trials
Mount Panorama: The Team Hawkes trained Mount Panorama hated being restrained in his trial and commenced to over races for the majority of the trial. Once they straightened this horse he really motored home and looked to have plenty in the tank as they crossed the line. A lugging bit has been applied and he looks a good chance.
Tessera: Tessera was checked when about to commence his run with Capitalist in his debut trial. He still hit the line OK that day and has since come out and won a slow trial under a nice grip. He gets the blinkers for his debut and will be well in the market.
Miss Ballantine: Chris Waller traditionally takes his time with 2YO’s and this lanky filly has been hitting the line nicely under her own steam. Not without a chance.
Kings of Leon: The Matt Smith trained Kings of Leon was first seen in a barrier trial at Hawkesbury in December. He absolutely motored to the line that day before working home nicely in January barrier trial (not beaten far by the promising Defcon).
Best of the Raced Brigade
Canny Rocket: Canny Rocket came out of the same race that was won by My Country. Canny Rocket was a much better run on the day being trapped wide and still hitting the line nicely. Is bred to appreciate the wet ground and has the advantage of a debut run which aid him both in fitness and education.
We’re taking on Scarlet Rain again. This time we will have the conditions of the track on our side which was the big question last time.
