Canterbury, Friday, 23 January
Current Track condition: Soft 7
Expected track condition: Soft – Heavy
Race 2: 1200m 2YO Maiden Handicap
A field of ten line up for the second at Canterbury tonight with three horses on debut.
Canterbury has received 24ml of rain in the past 24 hours with more to come tonight. This will be a rain affected track but the Canterbury surface should race well considering.
Best of the First Starters
Volpino: One of two runners on debut for the Snowden stable and both horses have strong riders engaged. Volpino has had four career trials with a brief let up in between. He works to the line nicely and will appreciate the 1200m. Has to be a chance but not one that appears to be a first-up sting.
Longreach: Brought along slowly by the Snowden stable and has been tuned right up for his debut run with three trials. He’s improved every time, is well bred and has James McDonald engaged. He looks the one in early markets that could firm right up and the Exchange will be a great guide as the stable doesn’t often miss when they bet.
Best of the Raced Brigade
Hussterical: This horse was trapped wide on debut and did a pretty good job to stick on in the circumstances. Despite being rundown on the line by Mega Wall I expect him to have a big tactical advantage tonight given his ‘in run’ position dictating with questionable speed engaged.
Mega Wall: A horse I’ve had an eye on and suggested a bet on him last start before he was heavily backed. He ran a great race on the inside of the track which wasn’t the place to be. From barrier 9 he’ll have to go back to last and motor home out wide.
Gitan: A nice debut run by this horse when stuck on the fence at Canterbury. Hasn’t been seen at the trials, which is a concern so happy to let it run around against us tonight.
