Caulfield Markets R1 – 8

R1 Ladbrokes BM 78 2000m | 1:25pm

Data Point is promising and two runs over 1400m this prep have set him up to reach a new peak over a more suitable 2000m here. Bullish Stock won over an unsuited 1500m first up and will be even better suited up to 2000m here.

There’s plenty of progressive types in this race so looking a little wider than the top two favourites with Theanswermyfriend and Gran Tryphena. Both returned ratings that are very competitive here and although a slight query whether they can transfer the form to turf, they look on the improve and well suited over 1600m

This is a very competitive race with a number of chances. Firenze has been up since January, but Weir managed to get him run to a big new career peak last start when winning at Moonee Valley over 2500m. A repeat of that run is very hard to beat here.

Plot The Course ran a new peak with the blinkers on last start and given he’s still relatively lightly raced for a 5YO, this could be his best preparation yet. He looks ideally suited with the step up to 1600m.

R5 Mvenpick Ice Cream BM84 | 1400m | 3:45pm

A very tricky race. Kilmacurragh is a lightly raced promising horse and looks ideally suited here resuming over 1400m from a middle draw. From the Hawkes camp he could easily turn up and run a new career peak here, which will make him hard to beat. Tiny’s Legacy was plain last start, but prior runs at the Provincials returned ratings that are somewhere in the mix here. Hard to be confident he can win, but he’s certainly not the worst in this race.

R6 Catanach’s Blue Sapphire Stakes | 1200m | 4:25pm

Flying Artie is a potential G1 horse on his 2YO ratings, especially that 2nd placing behind Extreme Choice in the Blue Diamond. There’s some uncertainty here about how he’ll return as a 3YO, but he’s clearly on top and hardest to beat. Kens Dream will be much fitter after his last start 2nd at MV and could progress to a new career peak. Barthelona holds the fitness edge.

Race Confidence: Good

Runner Name Rating
1. Flying Artie $2.20
4. Kens Dream $4.60

R7 ITalkTravel Caulfield Village Stakes | 1200m | 5:05pm

The early markets looked to have some holes in them here with the likes of Keen Array and Clearly Innocent over-rated. Sebring Sun was rock solid last start behind Fast Cash and ran to a rating that can be right in the finish here. Illustrious Lad will be a long way back, but has a big closing sprint and if the track is offering assistance to that type of style then he’s right in it. Taddei Tondo mixes his form, but was very good last start in the Fast Cash race and has a number of other performances in this history that are very competitive here. He’s a longshot with a genuine winning chance.

R8 Nick Johnstone Ladies Day Vase| 1600m | 5:45pm

A very difficult race to close the program. Kaniana was ridden positively last start and ran to a big new career peak when just run down behind Don’t Doubt Mamma. The draw is awkward, but if she could repeat that run then she’s capable of being right in the finish here. There’s plenty of other chances though so very hard to bet with any confidence.
