Belmont Markets R1 – 9

R1 | 1400m | 2:04pm

A very low grade city maiden to start the program. Dragorlad was solid last start when wide all the way and only beaten 0.5 lengths. He’s at least lightly raced and has some upside, which is more than can be said for most of these. Corrente comes off a solid rating 3rd last start at this track and distance in what looks a competitive rating

Comment: Someday One Day looks the dominant top chance here after running well last start over this track and distance despite being caught wide with no cover for the trip. He’s drawn wide again, but the WA wizard William Pike takes over and today’s track should give those running on their chance.

A tricky race with a few of these coming off recent form well below their best, so forecasting performance is difficult. Charlestown has no such problems though, coming off the back of tow solid ratings that make him hard to beat here and he gets W Pike taking over the reigns. He’s clearly the best chance, but I wouldn’t be diving into odds on about him.

The top two are well clear of the others in this race. Leaning towards Bomber Bay who was strong late when first up over 1200m last start and has good scope to improve toward peak ratings from last preparation that are a touch better than the favourite. As long as the track is giving those from back off the pace a chance, he appeals as the value in the race. No knock on War God at all. He’s racing in career best form and will be hard to beat again.

Royal Supreme had no luck last start behind Flying Roar but did a good job to make up ground against a moderate pace bias, on a track that played more towards handy runners on the day. The step up to 1400m with the prospect of more genuine pace up front here looks ideal.
