Western Sydney Wanderers v Central Coast Mariners

Saturday October 14, 5:35pm AEDST

Match Odds

Match Overview

Western Sydney were very impressive in Round 1. Very stable at the back and with a directness in attack that was missing last season. At times they were still guilty of not converting all their chances but in Spanish pair Cejudo and Rieira they are going to score plenty of goals.

Central Coast lost 5-1 at home to local rivals the Jets in what must have been a heart-breaking start for their fans. After conceding 53 goals last season and 70 the year before it is a concern. That said they were quite good for long periods only to be picked off time and again.

Key Statistics

  • Central Coast have lost 19 of their last 27 away matches
  • Central Coast have trailed at half time in 17 of their last 27 away matches
  • Both teams managed 20+ shots in the first round first and second ranked in the league

Verdict

Tough to see the Mariners getting anything from the match. It will be an open end to end affair with plenty of goals.

Melbourne Victory v Melbourne City

Match Overview

Victory were the better team for long periods in the Big Blue against Sydney FC and in Dutchman Leroy George they have a fantastic new signing. They had plenty of the ball but failed to turn that into any clean-cut chances against the best defence in the competition. The return of internationals Mark Milligan, James Troisi and Kosta Barbarouses adds plenty of experience and creativity.

City eased to a comfortable 2-0 win over the Roar in a game that was of quite poor standard. Stefan Mauk was a standout and whilst I was a little pessimistic before the match I liked the look of Ross McCormack. They still need to find some more creativity and will be lifted by the appearance of Tim Cahill after his Socceroo heroics midweek, it remains to be seen how much action he will see after that 120-minute effort.

Key Statistics

  • 18 of the 22 derbies have seen over 2.5 goals with an average of 3.18 goals per match
  • Nine of the 22 derbies have seen over 3.5 goals
  • Victory have won 10 derbies with City seven and five draws
  • Victory failed to record a shot on target in Round 1 whilst City managed just the two.

Verdict

Despite the lack of creativity from either team last week the history of the Melbourne Derby is littered with goals.
