IRISH 2000 GUINEAS RACING TIPS | SUNDAY 22 MAY 2022
Off the back of yesterday’s results, the track appears to be much closer to soft than a good surface, as horses who usually struggle in wet ground didn’t fire a shot at all, with most races won by mudlarks.
I’m expecting the far side rail to be hot and begging accordingly.
BEST BACK OF THE DAY: RACE 3 | #6 Lord North
He’s the best horse in his race and only has to contend with State Of Rest. I’m happy to back him and save on State Of Rest as the rest of the field don’t belong in G1’s.
Race 1 | Irish Guineas Festival | Key Runners
4. FINSCEAL DE GEO
8. NEVER ENDING STORY
9. OLIVIA MARALDA
Not interested in this race from a betting perspective. It’s an Irish incentive race, I’m sitting out. I expect backing for the big stables though.
Race 2 | Irish Guineas Festival | Key Runners
3. PIRATE JENNY
12. SHE’S IN THE GAME
9. COUNT TO FIVE
I’m confident that this race is down to four winning chances from the 18 acceptors. The majority only seem capable winning in a lower grade with easy draws, or back on synthetic at Dundalk.
PIRATE JENNY looks like she could be a black type horse in handicap company. She was rolled by HMS Endeavour on debut but that horse went onto G1 company. She went one better to break her maiden and now gets an extremely generous handicap mark in my opinion and can exploit that here. Her dangers come from most of the traffic that will be in her way, but three key rivals.
ELANORA who threatens to win one of these and always runs well, SHE’S IN THE GAME whose form at 1200-1400m reads 83222116, and COUNT TO FIVE who has a similar profile to the favourite with lesser weight.
BACK (WIN) – Pirate Jenny for 3.5 units
Follow any big market moves on the other three aforementioned runners, all currently $9 or higher at time of writing.

6. LORD NORTH
8. STATE OF REST
4. HELVIC DREAM
LORD NORTH is the best horse in this race and it was great to see him return to form in Dubai after nearly losing his life in 2021. He has one of the best turns of foot in European racing, and Dettori will give him every possible chance as he makes his way over for the ride on him alone. He just needs to get past STATE OF REST as the two have the remainder covered by some way.
HELVIC DREAM stole a win in the race last year and isn’t G1 material, whilst O’Brien’s pair are frighteningly inconsistent. ALENQUER beat Lord North on synthetic but that was a barrier trial for the Gosden horse, used as a tune up for Dubai after the long spell.
BACK (WIN) – Lord North for 4.5 units
BACK (WIN) – State Of Rest for 1.5 units

4. PEARLS GALORE
8. TWILIGHT SPINNER
7. THUNDER BEAUTY
PEARLS GALORE should be winning this on Space Blues form alone. That star colt taught her a few galloping lessons last year, but she’s come back well with a great fresh win. She’s a classy miler with no knocks and is simply better than these, hence the even money quote.
TWILIGHT SPINNER tackles the mile for the first time, despite being sired by a sprinter, out of a sprinting dam. The sectionals on her win over 1400m were pretty unappealing, and I think she’s being bet on stable rep. Pearls Galore should have her measure at set weights.
The rest aren’t good enough.
BACK (WIN) – Pearls Gone for 5 units

6. HOMELESS SONGS
I think Coolmore have it the wrong way around again with jockey bookings. They’ve put forward TUESDAY as their top seed but she didn’t impress me in the English 1000 Guineas and this might just be a sideshow for the Oaks.
HISTORY is much preferred, having quickened in slick fashion last time out to blow by AGARTHA in the Guineas Trial. Both horses were excellent that day, though I am put off Agartha here by the fact that O’Brien sends out Lullaby to make the pace. It worked to soften her up that day, and I’m sure a repeat dose is on the cards.
HOMELESS SONGS is also another promising type but she might be a Leopardstown-only type. She flopped away from that track last season. She was scratched from the French Guineas for this, so the stable expect big things despite being horrendously out of form with 1 win from 60 runners, at an SP of 1.75
BACK (WIN) – History for 2.5 units
BACK (WIN) – Homeless Songs for 2.5 units
Race 6 | Irish Guineas Festival | Key Runners
17. MIDNIGHT FIRE
12. ROUGH DIAMOND
10. SHELLY BANKS
Another wide open affair that I can’t get a read on and am happy to place in the too hard basket.
Race 7 | Irish Guineas Festival | Runners
4. MISS MIRABELL
6. DARK VEGA
If Tuesday does indeed manage to claim the 1000 Guineas I imagine they’ll come to plunder the price on GEORGETA who finished 2L behind her before claiming her maiden last start. The juice in the track suits her more than the others in the field and she’s in receipt of 7kgs from her main rivals.
BACK (WIN) – Georgeta for 1.5 units (Only if Tuesday wins 1000 Guineas)
