The key contenders

2020 brings about another hotly contested Hottest 100 competition with a mix of local-made and foreign-made songs among the favourites.

After a 2019 filled with accolades from Australia and abroad, a Hottest 100 title would be the cherry on top for Tones And I, with her record-breaking song ‘Dance Monkey’ currently the slight favourite on the Exchange. At the time of writing, the song has returned to #1 on the ARIA charts for its 21st week atop the ladder after spending one week in second place at the start of 2020.

Hot on her tail is Denzel Curry, whose Like A Version cover of Rage Against The Machine’s ‘Bulls On Parade’ has attracted plenty of the early money after trading at a high of $4.40 early on.

Another popular selection that has received its fair share of money is Billie Eilish’s ‘bad guy’. The American youngster has fast become one of the world’s most recognisable pop stars and ‘bad guy’ got plenty of love in Australia, going 6x Platinum and hitting #1 spot on the ARIA charts for two weeks.

Other songs which look to be outside contenders are G Flip’s ‘Drink Too Much’, ‘Better In Blak’ by Thelma Plum and Mallrat’s ‘Charlie’.

Summary

Four of the past five winners have been from Australian artists and I’m picking that trend to continue this year.

While Denzel Curry has been getting plenty of attention in the early stages of voting, a Like A Version cover has never claimed the title and those voters who don’t listen to Triple J are unlikely to send votes his way.

Billie Eilish’s ‘bad guy’ was one of those unavoidable songs, entering the ARIA charts at #1 in mid-April and spending two weeks there. While I see it as a strong contender, I feel it’s well past its peak in popularity. Had the countdown been held six months ago, ‘bad guy’ would have had every chance. Instead, I’m banking on another Aussie to claim the crown.

Tones And I had a historic 2019, with ‘Dance Monkey’ topping the charts in over 30 different countries and breaking the record for most weeks at #1 on the ARIA charts where it still sits. Winning three ARIA awards and going 7x Platinum in Australia, it was hard to avoid Tones And I’s hit song no matter where you were in 2019 and due to the wide-spread popularity of it, I’m picking ‘Dance Monkey’ to be played in the #1 position when the countdown comes to a climax.
