FA Cup Final 2017: Chelsea v Arsenal

Chelsea v Arsenal

Sunday May 28, 2:30am AEST

Whilst the Gunners had a fairly soft run in this competition before they met City in the semis, Chelsea had to break down a typically stubborn Mourinho side at the Bridge before outclassing Spurs in the semis, despite neither Hazard nor Costa starting at Wembley. In the league, the Blues have impressed against their nearest rivals since Conte employed the 3-5-2 formation, going W5-D1-L2 against fellow top-six sides, though the fact that they kept only one clean sheet in 10 games against such opposition will give the Gunners some encouragement.

However, Wenger’s men have struggled against the big teams, going W1-D2-L5 against teams above them in the league, though they managed to net in all but one of these games. They did beat Man City in the semis and interestingly that win came after Wenger took a leaf out of Conte’s book and introduced three at the back after a string of disappointing results. Whether Arsenal can find three centre backs to field remains to be seen though as Holding and Mertesacker are the only two who are definitely available. What’s more, Wigan’s 2013 triumph over Man City was the only instance of the side we have lower in our gradings coming out on top in FA Cup finals since 2000/01, so the Gunners look to have it all to do.

Despite the strong record of favourites, Arsenal’s victory over Tim Sherwood’s Aston Villa in 2015 was the only time a team has won an FA Cup Final by more than one goal since 2003/04, so it would be a surprise to see a resounding victory for Conte’s title winners. Given the hard-fought nature of recent FA Cup finals, dutching the draw at 3.9 and Chelsea to win by one goal at 3.75 looks a solid play at combined odds of 1.91. For those looking to get Chelsea on-side in the 90 minutes, we’d advise backing the win and both teams to score at 3.6 since both these sides’ games against the top teams have tended to produce goals, with the 2-1 correct score of interest at 8.5.
