College Football Championship: Expert Preview

The Clemson Tigers will look to defend their title when they play host to the LSU Tigers in the 2019 College Football Championship Game.

The Analysts share their expert insight and betting strategy ahead of the biggest college football game of the year.

The Story So Far

The 2020 College Football Playoff National Championship takes place on Monday, Jan. 14 at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome in New Orleans.

For College football fans, they have a lot to get excited about as Joe Burrow, who is favourite to be the number one pick in the 2020 draft, leads the undefeated LSU Tigers against Trevor Lawrence, who is tipped to be the number one pick in the 2021 draft, and the Clemson Tigers.

Game Preview

LSU entered the College Football Playoffs as the number one seed, and they’ve lived up to expectations with Vegas marking the Tigers as 5.5-point favourites. If you believe in destiny, then you need not look past LSU here after being the team that has been the talk of the entire college football community all season.

And rightly so. They have a Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback, steering an offensive unit putting up record-breaking numbers with the national coach of the year calling the plays. What’s not to like?

The problem? Games of this magnitude rarely play out the way they look on paper and LSU repeating a scoreline similar to their demolition of Oklahoma is something that I’m all but ruling out here.

If there’s one thing we’ve learnt about this Clemson program over their recent period of dominance, it’s that they are more than willing to turn a game into a dogfight and scrap and claw their way to the finish line. You only have to look at their semi-final performance against Ohio State to see that.

And they also have a stack of their own playmakers that people are sleeping on whilst the Joe Burrow juggernaut continues to grow. Isiah Simmons is one of the most dynamic players in college football and Travis Etienne has proven he can get the job done in a number of ways. And then there’s Trevor Lawrence.

Let’s make no mistake here, LSU looks like they have just about everything going for it entering this clash. All of the mojo is on their back and they will undoubtedly feel the weight of expectation. The problem is, they have the one thing the reigning National Champions don’t have: Championship pedigree.

Clemson has been here before. Their Sopohmore quarterback is 29-0 through his collegiate career and the way he rose to the occasion with that on the line against Ohio State showed exactly why. This team knows how to face adversity and revel in situations where they are forced to do so.

Venables will have something planned for Burrow and co. How they deal with it will decide this game. Their Heisman Trophy-winning Quarterback hasn’t faced a defensive unit as well-drilled as this in his collegiate career.

Give me Clemson with the points.
