Championship League Playoff 2017: Huddersfield Town v Reading

English League Championship Playoff

Huddersfield Town v Reading

Tuesday May 30, 12:00am AEST

Jaap Stam has done a fantastic job to get Reading to the Championship play-off final after the club finished 17th and 19th in the previous two seasons. The Royals ended the regular season strongly, winning seven of their last nine with five of the last seven featuring at least four goals. However, they were able to illustrate their defensive stubbornness in the play-off semi as they edged out a free-flowing Fulham side, conceding just one goal.

Huddersfield are one game away from a remarkable story after finishing 19th in the Championship 12 months ago to potentially reaching the top-flight for the first time since 1972. They finished the regular season poorly, albeit once their play-off place was confirmed, going W3-D1-L6 in their final 10 to finish with a goal difference of -2. They then scraped past Sheffield Wednesday in the semi-finals on penalties after drawing both legs.

Both sides won their respective home games 1-0 when meeting this season, but given Reading finished above the Terriers in the standings and the recent form of both clubs, it’s a major surprise to see Huddersfield as clear favourites. Given its title as ‘the richest game in football’, it’s less surprising to see that many of the recent Championship play-off finals have been cagey affairs. Since 2001, 10 of the 16 finals have had fewer than three goals, with nine having no more than one and both teams scoring in just three. We wouldn’t put anyone off backing Under 1.5 Goals at 2.94, but we can’t miss the opportunity to take Huddersfield on, with the Reading 1-0 correct score also of interest at 9.55.
