BBL07: Game 33 – Melbourne Stars v Sydney Thunder

Saturday 20th January 6:10pm ADST

Match Overview

The Sydney Thunder will be looking to keep their slim semi-finals hopes alive by overcoming cellar-dwellers Melbourne Stars at the MCG on Saturday.

Melbourne Stars

The Stars fell to the bottom of the ladder when they were beaten by a rejuvenated Sydney Sixers outfit on Tuesday night. After being sent into bat, only another cameo from Glenn Maxwell (28 off 16 balls) kept them afloat as they stuttered to 5/78, before a 50-run partnership between James Faulkner (28 off 30 balls) and Evan Gulbis (24 off 25 balls) lifted them to a respectable 7/128. However the Sixers had few troubles in knocking off the meagre target, getting home in the 16th over having lost only two wickets with young leg-spinner Daniel Fallins (0/25 off two overs) coming in for severe punishment.

Sydney Thunder

The Thunder’s most recent match also resulted in a loss to the Sixers, although they made a slightly better fist of things, reaching 6/156 after an entertaining innings of 49 off just 27 balls from promising all-rounder Chris Green. However the Thunder could also only take just two wickets during the chase, although they did at least force the match to the final ball after another outstanding spell from leg-spinner Fawad Ahmed who captured 1/22 off four overs. With a revamped top order featuring test players Usman Khawaja and James Vince, one area the Thunder should have clear superiority in is the opening six overs.

Key Stats

  • The Stars have outscored their opponents in the first six overs in just two out of seven matches this season.
  • The Thunder have outscored their opponents in the first six overs in four of their last five matches.
  • Usman Khawaja averages 68.33 at a strike-rate of 151.85 for the Thunder at the MCG.
