BBL07: Game 17 – Hobart Hurricanes v Adelaide Strikers

Hobart Hurricanes v Adelaide Strikers

Thursday January 4 — 7:10pm AEST

After claiming their first win of the tournament, the Hobart Hurricanes will be looking to inflict the Adelaide Strikers’ first loss of the competition at Bellerive Oval on Thursday night.

Hobart Hurricanes

The Hurricanes opened their account by turning the tables on the Sydney Thunder, who had beaten them comfortably only two days earlier. This time Hobart batted first and posted a monstrous 3/189 thanks largely to a wonderful 97 off 63 balls from destructive opener D’arcy Short, although he received crucial support from Ben McDermott who smacked an unbeaten 49 off just 25 deliveries. An excellent spell from leg-spinner Cameron Boyce (2/14 off three overs) put the Hurricanes in the box seat to defend their sizeable total, however a late flurry from the Thunder saw them almost steal the match before ultimately falling nine runs short.

Adelaide Strikers

There were no such concerns for the Strikers who completed a 56-run rout of the Brisbane Heat despite only making a modest 4/147 batting first, boosted by some late hitting from all-rounder Michael Neser (40 not out off 26 balls). Once again Adelaide were outstanding in the field, as they shot out the Heat’s much-vaunted batting line-up for just 91 with canny paceman Ben Laughlin picking up 3/11 off 2.2 overs, while Neser claimed two wickets to secure Man of the Match honours. Although the Strikers hold the edge here, particularly in the field, one area where the Hurricanes have shown superiority is at the start of their innings with the bat.
