AFL FUTURES PREDICTIONS | BETTING TIPS AND ANALYSIS

Premiers 2022: Melbourne

The Demons are the benchmark team of the competition after a stunning 2021, breaking a 57- year premiership drought! Became the first team since 2013 to win both the Minor Premiership and the Grand Final, proving their newfound ability to win big games when pressure and expectation is on.

With no major list changes and strong aspirations to win a Grand Final at their beloved MCG, the Demons are the team to beat again.

Coleman Medal: Jeremy Cameron

Jeremy Cameron had his fair share of interruptions last season, missing most of the preseason as well as 10 games with hamstring injuries. Even with these setbacks and entering a new team dynamic, the 2019 Coleman Medalist kicked 2.83 goals per game, ranking 2nd in the AFL.

Now with a full preseason under his belt, Cameron looks in top nick and ready to produce his 2019 best.

Coleman Medal: Aaron Naughton

If you’re looking for a roughie with the potential to breakout – a’ la Harry McKay 2021- look no further than Western Bulldogs’ star Aaron Naughton! The stats suggest the high flying 22-year-old will be the one to watch.

The last 8 Coleman Medalists ranked in the top 10 for average marks Inside 50 and average scoring shots in the preceding season. Naughton ranked 4th and 10th in these stats respectively in 2021.

The last 10 Coleman Medalists kicked 32 more goals than their next best teammate on average. In the absence of Josh Bruce, Naughton will be the main man up forward and should have the lion’s share of Bulldogs goals in 2022. Worth the punt.

Rising Star: Nick Daicos

It’s a toss of the coin between last year’s number 1 draft pick Jason Horne-Francis and Collingwood prodigy Nick Daicos.

Both proved the hype was real, however I’m going with Daicos by a nose! The son of a gun will be playing a friendly role off half-back with stints in the midfield, a similar role to previous winners Andrew McGrath (2017), Callum Mills (2016) and Dyson Heppell (2010).

Has more support from teammates around the ball than Horne-Francis, who might find it difficult to impact games from the North Melbourne forward line – where they ranked 17th for inside 50s last season.

Brownlow Medal: Marcus Bontempelli

The Bont’s 33 votes last season would’ve locked in the Brownlow Medal 93 times in its 97-year history. The AFLPA MVP is 26 years old (average age of the winner for past 10 seasons) and in the prime of his career after a 25 disposal, 3 goal game in the Grand Final.

Brownlow Medal: Jack Steele

Over the last 2 seasons, the St Kilda skipper ranks equal first for Brownlow votes with 46 alongside last year’s winner Ollie Wines and 2020 runner-up Travis Boak.

Steele is the only player to place in the top 5 for both of the last 2 seasons. Has a great game style that attracts votes and if the Saint’s push for finals, Steele’s Brownlow votes will improve again.

Minor Premiers: Brisbane Lions

We have seen 7 minor premiers in as many seasons and it could be the Lions turn this year around.

Brisbane’s home ground advantage is one of the strongest in the AFL, with a 28-3 record at the Gabba over the last 3 home and away seasons.

The Lions have a seasoned and talented list that is ready to contend. This is their best chance at a premiership tilt – and a minor premiership would be a good start.

Least Season Wins: Adelaide

Of the bottom teams from last season, Adelaide have the least amount of upside going into 2022.

It will be a close race between the Crows, North Melbourne and Gold Coast but I have Adelaide “winning” their second wooden spoon in 3 years.

The Crows have the youngest and most inexperienced side in the AFL. The last 7 sides to rank last in both categories have won 3.5 games on average.

AFL FUTURES | JOEL CASHMAN’S BETTING STRATEGY

BACK: Melbourne for the AFL Premiership 2022

BACK: Jeremy Cameron for the Coleman Medal

BACK: Aaron Naughton for the Coleman Medal

BACK: Nick Daicos for the Rising Star

LAY: Finn Callaghan for the Rising Star

The No. 3 draft pick will be hard pressed to play in the GWS Giants midfield this year.

BACK: Marcus Bontempelli for the Brownlow Medal

BACK: Jack Steele for the Brownlow Medal

BACK: Brisbane Lions for Minor Premiers

LAY: Port Adelaide for Minor Premiers

I’ve tipped them to slide out of the top 4 altogether.

BACK: Adelaide for Least Season Wins

LAY: Collingwood for Least Season Wins

Expect them to push up out of the bottom 4 this season. Very classy, just need an avenue to goal.
