Flemington Carnival Guide

This year's carnival promises to be one of high quality as usual. There are lots of hotly debated questions amongst punters at the moment. These include; Will Bart be able to win his 13th Melbourne cup? Could Alcopop the unknown South Australian be the fairytale race story? And whilst the overseas contingent does not look as strong as previous years, the Cup is still a truly worldwide event.

Day 1 will kick start this showcase with an unprecedented 4 Group 1 events, 2 Group 2 and 4 Group 3 races.

The Derby and Oaks markets are headlined by two up and coming superstars of Australian racing; Shamoline Warrior in the Derby and Run For Narra in the Oaks.

The showcase of the carnival, The Melbourne Cup, is the second richest race in the world now worth $5,650,000. As a result the best trainers throughout the world try to ensure they have horses ready and worthy for this event.

With last year's Cup winner Viewed winning the Caulfield Cup, previous winner Efficient winning the Turnbull Stakes unexpectedly at his last lead up run, the Cup promises to be a vintage one. Throw in the battler's champion - South Australian Alcopop, who has been matched as high as 660 in Betfair's Antepost market, needless to say there is soon to be a very special race once again with a piece of history soon to be completed.

This year Betfair has produced a new Pick a Winner guide to the Melbourne Cup. It is based purely on the past statistics of Melbourne Cup winners, and then condensed into a help sheet at quickly picking a winner, if you would like to take a look, click here.
