Each June during the Winter Racing Carnival, The Eagle Farm Racecourse in Brisbane holds a 2400m race known as the Queensland Derby. Since its origin in 1868 the Eagle Farm Racecourse has seen jockeys of all ages win the Queensland Derby. In 1969 William Harris was only ten years old when he crossed the finish line in first place riding a horse named Zambesi.

Today race enthusiasts come to watch this traditional and historic competition with a grand prize as great at $500,000. Since the year 1980 the Queensland Derby has been classified as a Group 1 Australian Thoroughbred horse race with set weights for horses that are three years old. Before the 1980's The Queensland Derby was in a Principal Race category racing horses on the same track at the same distance, but with a different set weight.

Throughout the years several jockeys have finished the race in first place numerous times; jockeys including Jim Cassidy, Mick Dittman and George Moore have won the Queensland Derby grand prize three or more times each. Last year's winner was Jim Byrne with horse Riva San, The odds this year are not yet determined, however the race is nearing and jockeys are gearing up for what is sure to be a strong race at the timeless Eagle Farm Racecourse.
