The race is held in Flemington race course every year during autumn in the month of February or March in Melbourne. The prize money awarded in 2008 was AUD$755,000. The winner of 2009 is Heart of Dreams and in 2008 it was Light Fantastic.

The first Betfair Guineas was started in 1986, making it a comparatively a modern race. It is Set Weights all over 1600m with a 2.5kg adjustment for fillies. In 1986 it belonged to Group 3 race and the first winner was the class horse True Version. From the year of 1987 on it belongs to Group 1 race. During 1998 the Betfair Guineas turned the third leg of the initiative Australian Triple Crown for 3Year Olds and the distance was set to 2000m on Australian Cup Day in 1998, 1999 and 2000.

In 2001 the Guineas turned back to its actual distance and date of mid-February. In 1995 there was a reconstitute of VRC autumn metropolitan horse race dates and process, and the 2005 Guineas was carried out on Newmarket Handicap day as section of the VRC's Super Saturday.
